Entrancing film!
I am absolutely embarrassed for all the k.d. fans who gave this film a bad review! Shame on you! Before you purchase this film, you need to understand that this is not your typical Hollywood big-screen movie with a straighforward love story and a happy end. This is an independent picture with a rather complex storyline that not many of us can relate to. Salmonberries is written about a different side of the world, about people with broken hopes and lives, about the human ability to understand one another even in the most bizarre of circumstances. This film is so painfully deep and so unaccustomely romantic that is takes your breath away - of course, you have to be a real connoisseur of complex vision and of independent film.As far as k.d.'s performance goes, it is flawless, impeccable! She so masterfully slipped into Kotzebu's skin and has delivered the character in the most natural and graceful way. I cannot imagine another actress play this role better than k.d.! Despite the fact that she's a truly gifted singer, she is also an amazing actress! I strongly believe that k.d. deserves our biggest compliments and applause for this performance. I take my hat off to her!Salmonberries is a truly entrancing film, accompanied by k.d.'s amazing Barefoot, and it is quite an experience!

Good Movie
salmonberries was a little grim, including the landscape. but, as a big k.d. lang fan, I did enjoy watching her act and really paid attention to the acting and the plot. the plot was a little confusing at first, but when I finally understood it, I really did enjoy it and thought all the actors did a great job in such a difficult film location. kd actually commented on that in the interview included with the movie. my usual barometer for a movie is if I go back and watch it again-that means I really enjoyed it. and, I did watch it again, and will probably watch it again from time to time. I really hope other people out there give this movie a chance and watch it-if you pay close attention, you'll really enjoy it.

Salmonberres Movie
I bought this movie because it featured k.d. Lang. I love her music and thought it would be fun to see her in a movie. I wasn't disappointed. It is an unusual film, but that's the kind I like!

Slow drama, interesting mostly because of k.d. lang and the Alaskan filming locations
Salmonberries [DVD] [1991 ]The film tells the story of a friendship between two lost souls who meet by chance in the library of a remote settlement in the interior of Alaska. Kotzebue (k.d. lang), who works in a local mine, is a findling who claims to be of Russian origin. Roswitha (Rosel Zech) is the librarian who came to Alaska after fleeing East Germany and seeing her husband shot dead during their flight to the West. This is a slow drama, interesting mainly because of the presence of k.d. lang on the screen. While she may not the most accomplished actress, she makes the androgynous character of Kotzebue very believable. Rosel Zech, though little known outside her native Germany, is a very accomplished actress indeed, and the two leading ladies play well off each other. The fact that most of the film is actually shot on location in Alaska (except for a short passage taking place and filmed in Germany) also makes it rather special. Except for a few chocolate box shots of a dog sled trip in the snowy wastes of Alaska, the viewer gets a very good feeling for the godforsaken location where the two women live. The DVD plays in English except for one short scene which was filmed in German and which the director intentionally left without English subtitles - this is noted in the cover notes and is not a shortcoming of the DVD edition. There are no subtitles. By way of extra features, there is a trailer and a 45 minute interview with k.d. lang. A nice touch is the list of scenes/chapters on the inside cover, which makes navigation nice and easy. Salmonberries [DVD] [1991

Beautiful, shaky, puzzling
This film is set in a small town in Alaska and is visually very beautiful. The storyline requires a little patience and features KD Lang as an unpredictable misfit who forms a relationship with the town librarian whilst trying to solve the mystery of her origins. The characterisation is a little shaky - KD Lang kicks off like a 12 year old acting out, then is transformed into a sensible adult while helping the librarian, Rosel Zech, to come to terms with a past traumatic event. She then reverts back to scowling silence while the mystery of her origin is unravelled (haircuts are the giveaway). It's not a smooth ride but there are some exquisite, well wrought moments in the film and I plan to watch it again soon. Given that it won the Best Film award at the Montreal Film Festival, I am left feeling that I must have missed something. Lastly, don't believe any sensational hype about this film - it is a tale of tortured souls, not Brokeback Mountain for girls.

Incorrect product details
This is a weird movie...and, after seeing it once, a big disappointment after having thoroughly enjoyed Bagdad Cafe by the same director. K. D. Lang's acting can be dismissed as long as she doesn't speak, but when she does, it cannot: it's horrible. "Impressive"? Indeed! There were no closed-captions or dubbing, in contradiction to the Product details. Important scenes in German and (maybe) less important vignettes in Inupiat(?)were without translation. Not only is the movie weird; so is the box in which it came. On the back, Jack Palance is listed among those starring. In the film, however, the same character (I infer) is listed as Chuck Connors. The two actors do look amazingly similar, but still... Kotzebue is spelled "Kothebue" and the original music is by Bob Telson, not K. D. Lang. Under the disc inside the box, in light grey letters that are, apparently, designed to be overlooked, appears: "Contains scene in German with no English subtitles, this was an artistic decision made by the director Percy Adlon." What a cop-out! Didn't the director, or whoever printed this disc, know that "closed-captions" can be closed? If I hadn't bought it from Amazon, I would think that it's bootlegged.
