Great introduction to a brilliantly unique artist.
HR Giger is best known for designing the creature in the 'Alien' movies, but I first became aware of him through his album cover artwork for heavy metal bands such as Danzig, Celtic Frost and Carcass. I wanted a book of his work and opted for the paperback version of Taschen's 'Giger - Basic Art', as I preferred the cover image to that of the hardback edition.Far from being a typically flimsy paperback, this version has a nice, thick, glossy sleeve and good quality pages. The book contains nice reproductions of Giger's most famous (and infamous) pieces, including 'The Master and the Margarita', 'Satan I' and the highly controversial 'Landscape XX' which resulted in an obscenity trial. There are comprehensive explanatory notes which provide loads of information about the artist and his work.'Giger Basic Art' is highly recommended to anyone who wants a nice, affordable collection of the Swiss genius's work, but be warned. While he is well known for his use of dark and disturbing themes, some of the pieces featured within are VERY sexually explicit and NOT suitable for minors.

Alientastic
Don't worry if you've not heard of H.R.Giger, you probably have seen some of his work down the line. Amongst his fantastic artwork is the The Alien from the 'Alien' films. If you find that horrific, you haven't even come close to rest of his dark, erotic, macabre gothic devilish world of work. An absolute genius of creativity. This book is a fair priced introduction to one of the greatest artist minds of recent history.

Great work!
Gret value for money, including detailed anecdotes of Gigers younger life, career and relationships. Problems are its a little bit small, between A4 and A5 in size, nice and compact but you can't really appreciate the paintings as much as you might. Also it is only about 100 pages long, so there is less of Giger's work that might be included, though the ones that are included are particularl nice and rarer pieces, like The Witches painting which I am a big fan of. Nice that it doesn't just focus on Alien, though this film it is given an honourable position as the major source of Giger's popularity, but significantly includes GIger's earlier and later art work when he was moving onto other projects and ideas, particularly sculpting. Another potential criticism is the text is quite small, of about a font size 9 or 10, which is nice but might be difficult for some people to read.I would recomment it since Giger art books are quite rare, though is not really worth above £15. Be warned that some of the art work inside is quite sexually explicit so is not suitable for those under 16.

Paperback
It's a pocket edition more than anything but it's well made and you can see all details of Giger's artwork

Great but paper mites bit me
The book’s great. However there were bugs or mites that bit me and left an allergic reaction for two weeks, since it’s an old/second hand book. Haven’t wanted to touch it since, nor place it near any other books. Not sure if I’m eligible for a refund or some form of compensation though.
