this little guy is a real sweetheart
I like this little thingy so much I'm going to have to come up with a name for it. This replaces the Logitech Revolution Logitech VX Revolution Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks (Black) which had to be returned for some design/usage issues I had with it, and so far this is turning out to be exactly what I was looking for in a mouse. This mouse is used daily on my notebook which currently acts as my main computer.Installation was flawless and the receiver sticks out only 1/4 of an inch. So right now it is plugged in to one of the USB ports as opposed to the Revolution's receiver which is much bigger and which I had plugged in to a port on a Belkin 4-port hub (another great and useful little gizmo) Belkin USB 2.0 4-Port Ultra Mini Hub F5U407. Also, the width of the receiver is minimal and doesn't interfere with the USB port right next to it in any way.I'm right-handed but this is an ambidextrous mouse. The back/forward buttons - which I can't seem to live without anymore - are easier for me to operate as they are accessed by the index finger instead of the thumb. For me that is much easier as I have arthritis fairly bad in my hands - especially my thumbs - and using my thumbs for anything is painful. The position of the back/forward button works well for me based on the size of my hand which is relatively small. To me, it's more intuitive to use the thumb instead of the index finger for the back button, and since my 2 previous mice had that feature, I had to get used to using the index finger instead. However, I'm more than happy to getting used to that as I don't have to worry about my thumb hurting anymore. The scroll wheel is a bit smaller than most scroll wheels but hasn't presented any problems at all. You can access 4 different scroll capabilities by pressing down on the scroll wheel. I currently have the button behind the scroll wheel programmed for "Close" but there's a multitude of other options available. The battery case (uses 2 "AAA" batteries) is easy to open with a little lever that pops it open underneath the mouse and that's where the receiver is stored. The on/off button is also underneath and there's a red LED on top of the mouse when the batteries are low/going out. I think the only negative I can think of is that it would have been nice to have the on/off button or at least a usage light located on top of the mouse as a reminder to turn it off. It's a little too small for my husband - as was the Revolution VX - but it's all about a matter of preference. I think it's pretty much a natural function to keep the palm of your hand on the table/surface area when using a mouse and how the various buttons work when you are in that usage mode is what will make the mouse good or bad for you. For me and my smaller hands and screwed-up thumb -- this works very well. I was planning to get a Bluetooth mouse for the netbook, MSI Wind U100-432US 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Black but am now seriously considering getting another one of these.UPDATE: Today is February 24, 2010, and I finally had to change out the AAA batteries in this mouse for the first time. Not too bad for longevity as I use the mouse constantly instead of the track pad on the laptop, and I can never remember to turn the mouse off so it's "on" 24/7. I'm just as happy with this little guy today as I was when I wrote the original review.

Logitech Delivers Again!
Bottom-Line: The "VX Nano Cordless Laser Notebook Mouse" is an excellent example of a pointing device done right!I have long trusted and enjoyed Logitech pointing devices (mice); they are on the whole, affordable, attractive, highly functional performance stars. So when I started looking for the perfect companion to my new Dell Latitude E6500 notebook computer, the brand of mouse I would eventually get was never in doubt. But the model took some time to decide on, Logitech offers so many! In the end I decided on the "VX Nano Cordless Laser Notebook Mouse," for its size, feature-set, and price. The 411The ($39.99 at Amazon.com) Logitech "VX Nano Cordless Laser Notebook Mouse" is a highly functional, lightweight laser mouse that fits perfectly in the (my) hand. Though it is designed for right-handed users (of course, we left-handed users are always an afterthought it seems), the mouse feels equally at home in my left hand. The (AAA battery powered) mouse is cleverly designed. One of the reasons I chose the unit was the "Nano" USB transceiver it uses. It is so small that when not in use, it tucks neatly inside the bottom of the mouse inside the batter compartment, and when inserted into its housing it automatically turns the mouse off! To release it Logitech managed to place a small green eject button besides the housing. Once the nano-transciever is ejected the mouse turns itself on. Too cool and convenient!Other design pluses include a small power button on the bottom of the unit, forward and back buttons (for use with the Internet), universal scroll wheel, and a paging button (for use with Windows Vista & Windows 7 for scrolling through open programs). The universal scroll button, in addition to it up and down functionality, can also be used to scroll pages (web, word, excel, etc.) from side-to-side.If you do not wish to insert the nano-transceiver directly into the laptop's USB port, Logitech includes a "docking station" for it with a 3' long USB cable, so you can move the transceiver around the desk if need be.Installation & UseThe "VX Nano Cordless Laser Notebook Mouse" will work with either Windows (7, Vista, XP), and or Apple MacOS X 10.2.8 or later Operating Systems. The mouse was automatically detected by Windows 7 and worked as expected. However, Logitech does provide interface software called "SetPoint" that can be used to fine tune the performance of the mouse as well as assign different functions to the various buttons. After installing SetPoint on my notebook, Windows 7 complained of incompatibility, but I have noted no diminished functionality as a result. The "VX Nano Cordless Laser Notebook Mouse" works and works well. The unit feels good in my hand; i.e. it is not too small, but small enough and light enough to be carried on my notebook backpack in the handy mesh bag Logitech provided!Like all laser mice from Logitech the "VX Nano Cordless Laser Notebook Mouse" works flawlessly; the operation across a wide array of surfaces has been smooth. The mouse curse tracks across the screen without stuttering or sticking. The left and right hand side button click with satisfying easy. And I have really come to rely on the forward and back buttons fitted on the left hand side of the mouse; they make working with web pages almost seamless.ConclusionFor the price-point, reliability, and functionality, nothing beats a Logitech mouse, and the "VX Nano Cordless Laser Notebook Mouse" is an excellent example of a pointing device done right! Then again, I have come to expect nothing less the Logitech; their products continue to impress.

From a gamer's perspective
Most of my computer time is spent gaming (FPS/RP). That said, this mouse is great for laptops. It actually is kind of small so that takes some getting used to, but the ergonomics of it (for righties) is really comfortable. The slick scrolling feature is really cool, but more of a problem than help when switching weapons in FPSs. Even so, it is still pretty fun to just pick up the mouse and spin the scroller. It is nicely portable and the little USB receiver is very helpful and responsive (though I've never placed it farther than 3 feet and never without LOS due to cordless mice's usual unreliability). I can't imagine anyone having to take the receiver out unless your laptop fits really snugly into your bag; it's so small that you would really have be trying to damage it while it is plugged in.My biggest gripe about this mouse is the placement of the laser on the bottom of the mouse. It's right next to your thumb (as a righty). I'm completely used to slightly turning the mouse, which allowed me to move the cursor pixel by pixel, or very slightly while having a higher sensitivity; but with the placement on the side of the bottom, it takes quite a bit of geting used to (still far better than a touchpad) because mouse sensors have always been in the middle ever since trackballs. The response with the laser is noticeably better than optical from the first moment you move the cursor, even before you set your sensitivity (it seems to be high when you plug it in).Overall: I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a neat, little, on-the-go mouse. Gamers: Watch out for the placement of the laser, and note that it is about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of a regular-size mouse.
