Fusion is the function
Billy Cobham's Culturemix "Colours" was released a decade ago. In the present tense, especially on the first few listenings, this offering easily serves as Mr. Cobham's latest studio release. It incorporates the Steel Pan performance of Junior Gill which has become one of the elements in Cobham's sound over the last decade or so. Fusion is the function by which the musicians on this recording "speak" as a musical entity collectively as well as individually. For the genre conscious, "World Music" perhaps best describes the styles within. "Colours" gets underway with "Cuba On The Horizon", a somewhat heavy but floating up tempo "Island" flavored Samba. It's followed by a revisited edition of "Dessicated Coconuts" from the 1986 "Powerplay" LP. It carries all the intensity of "Stratus" from the LP "Spectrum". Next is "monster" Shuffle "Volcano", a composition by Keyboardist Marcos Uneda. Song four, which is the work of Junior Gill, is an "Island" sounding piece which seems to include a few familiar melodies within. Let your own ears be the judge! Next, is one of my personal favorites, "Black Orchid", a rather "Ethereal" sounding slow Samba. "Cara Mia" by Bassist Stefan Rademacher follows. It's a "Spacial" Swing, especially on the descending release. "Coffee Brown-Olive Green" is next, a slow "Airy" Samba. This features the Flumpet and Trumpet work of special guest Guy Barker. Next, a composition by Guitarist Per Gade, "Moscow Meeting" also features Mr. Barker. Second to last, "There And Back", has two distinct sections with which it does just that. The second of the two, in a good way is quite reminiscent of Ronny Jordan's "Vanston Place". The offering concludes with another revisited edition, from the 1985 LP "Warning", "Red & Yellow Cabriolet". It features an impeccable 32 measure Drum solo within the rhythmic framework, as well as Mr. Barker. Mr. Cobham's playing at the time of this recording is at a very high "plateau". The ensemble as a whole is right there with him. The overall production and sound on the album is second to none. Songs not listing the writer are the work of Mr. Cobham. This album is a must buy for any fans or lovers of Billy Cobham or music in general!

Alter Wein in neuen Schläuchen...
