Can this mattress be cut down? I realise I would also need to tailor the cover but I have a wooden basket that is 39cm x 76cm. Thanks

Yes it can be. I purchased mine to use in my dogs cage as it was too long I had to cut 10 inches off... I would suggest marking up and using maybe a hacksaw or jigsaw to cut it. I tried with sharp scissors and then used a bread knife..it worked ok but I will imagine you will get a better result using either the jigsaw or hacksaw to get a good straight cut. my normal cot sheets are too small as this is deeper than the old mattress. what size sheets should i buy?

I use cot bed ones but there a bit big I just tuck them underneath

Do you think i should wash the protective cover before use?

We didn't as it was clean and plastic wrapped on arrival, My granddaughter jumped straight on it and lay down before we got the sheet on. It really depends on how you feel :)
