Product Description Powerful 2CD career overview of Martin Carthy's near five decade adventure in music. Released to celebrate his 70th birthday. Over the past five decades Martin Carthy has been one of the most persistent and dedicated practitioners of English traditional music. He has been an essential figure in most of the significant developments in folk music during that time. To chronicle his career is to discuss the rich and diverse history of the English folk song revival since the early 1960s. His early work was an inspiration to both Bob Dylan and Paul Simon; Martin's reading of Lord Franklin became the template for Bob Dylan's Dream, whilst his arrangement of Scarborough Fair was the basis for the popular Simon & Garfunkel hit. More recently his influence has been widely acknowledged by artists as diverse as Paul Weller, Johnny Marr, Richard Thompson, Martin Simpson and Fleet Foxes. Review You don’t need to explore the history of the British folk revival for very long before getting a measure of the enduring influence of Martin Dominic Forbes Carthy, MBE.He’s been a towering presence over various aspects of the scene since being electrified as a 17-year-old in the early 1960s by the traditional singing of an elderly Norfolk herring fisherman called Sam Larner. Carthy went on to be a master guitarist and a boldly individual song interpreter; an electric folk pioneer; a central figure in numerous, diverse bands; and, very occasionally, a formidable writer of political song.To mark his 70th birthday, Topic – the label on which he has spent the large majority of his recording career – has compiled a 34-track double CD reflecting 40 years of recordings from over 20 albums. It’s far from exhaustive (you’ll have to forage for Free Reed’s The Carthy Chronicles box set from 2001 for the closest thing to that) but, illuminated by extensive sleeve notes, it still offers a thorough and entertaining insight into the jaw-dropping range and richness of the man’s magnificent career. The earliest tracks include his landmark arrangements of Scarborough Fair and Lord Franklin which helped ignite the imaginations of Paul Simon and Bob Dylan respectively. There are also plenty of the spritely collaborations with fiddle player Dave Swarbrick, which galvanised the nascent folk scene back in the day. With so much outstanding material at their disposal, the compilers must have had a nightmare deciding what to omit. But they’ve successfully covered most of the bases: the epic ballads Prince Heathen and Famous Flower of Serving Men; Watersons and Brass Monkey cameos; the starkness of David Ackles’ His Name Is Andrew. There’s fun stuff like The Devil & The Feathery Wife and A Stitch In Time, guitar wizardry on Siege of Delhi and The Harry Lime Theme, and his own momentous anti-war tirade The Dominion of the Sword. In a collection marked by the many shifting contours and altering styles of his remarkable career, its distinguishing feature is the inspirational compassion and humanity that threads through both the material and the performances of Carthy himself. A celebration, indeed. --Colin Irwin Find more music at the BBC This link will take you off in a new window P.when('A').execute(function(A) { A.on('a:expander:toggle_description:toggle:collapse', function(data) { window.scroll(0, data.expander.$expander[0].offsetTop-100); }); }); Review "A portrait of a musical life that displays a persistence and vitality undimmed for the best part of half a century." -- Uncut *****"A timely reminder of his enduring influence as a singer, guitarist, quiet radical and keeper of the flame." -- Q ****"Martin's mesmeric finger-picked guitar and dazzling reinventions of tradition span the decades masterfully" -- The Mirror **** See more

Martin the Master
A wonderful 2-CD collection reflecting the career of one of the most influential figures on the folk scene since the sixties. It's excellent value-for-money and a must for all Martin Carthy fans. There's not a weak track to be heard; the guitar work is superb, the singing crystal and the supporting cast isn't bad either.

Bargain alert!!!
This is an unbelievable bargain whether you purchase the CD or mp3. Martin Carthy and his wonderful family have created so much fantastic music that this just touches the surface but it really is a great start, if you're starting, or a great 2 disc compilation if you have most of the stuff already.

Essential? Yes
A trip through the life of Martin Carthy. If anything, a nod to the Imagined Village would have been nice, to add to the solo, Swarbrick, Brass Monkey and Waterson songs on here, but I don't think there is anything missing that should be on it.

Good collection of songs
This is a good collection of Martin Carthy songs covering most of his best songs. Laid out in chronological order they span 60 years of his career. Now at the age of 72 he still sounds just as good. I went to see him in concert recently and he signed the CD cover.
