You need to program your machine for espresso and coffee. Two different settings for amount of coffee and amount of water you need for your drink

Q: does anyone know how to force it to go into cleaning mode if the light does not come up?

The instruction book explains how to do this

Q: Would it function without a filter? I have RO unit with additional filter. It says smart I'm which concering. I'd avoid replacing that component.

It is advisable to use filters, since they optimize the water for coffee brewing. Actually some suppliers advise against RO water due to its effect on metal components of the heating system. Either way, when using a Jura without a filter, it will require decalcification periodically.

Q: Can you control temperature of coffee or milk to make it extra hot?

This machine is great making hot, really hot coffees and espressos. That about it. For milk beverages like cappuccino, I’m using Nespresso milk frother. All you need to do is to use prewarmed cups if it’s glass
