This is on the pricier side of hats, but I splurged and it is now my go-to hat for sun-filled adventures. Tested this hat on a recent trip to Kauai and loved it. This does have a longer front visor section that is really "flop proof" in heavy winds with the side and back sections of the hat being less rigid. The side sections of the visor stick out less than your standard boonie hat and are enough for some ear coverage, but are cut so that it won't hinder paddling or casting a line. The back section is also shorter than the front of the visor but provides some protection for the back of the neck. This hat did really well in surf and diving under waves, was nice and cool in the humid heat while kayaking and has different options on wearing it with the included lanyard. Packs flat in a backpack (be careful not to bend the front visor as it is formed and may affect its stiffness if bent). If you're looking for a sun hat for use while being active in water, surf, high winds, paddling, hiking, and fishing, then this could be your new hat, but if you're looking for a hat with greater sun coverage for something like gardening you might be disappointed.

You'd think a hat is a hat, but this one is different. It's a useful piece of sports equipment. Even though it looked a little weird, I wore it to play tennis last week, on a very hot, very bright day, when I'd usually be blinded by the sun's glare, with sweat pouring down my face, making it hard to see. This hat blocked the sun better than any cap I've had, absorbed perspiration incredibly well and kept my head cool. I'm sure it will work as well for kayaking.

With a closet full of sun/protection hats - I can replace them all with this one! I was able to be on the lake all day riding water craft, doing projects, and playing yard games and never did it fall off, leave me unprotected, or feel hot. Worth every penny! This is coming from someone that has had melanoma and skin issues caused by the sun. I no longer have to hide from the sun

This hat is great. I took it up on Mt. Evans and Grays Peak and dealt with winds up to 30 MPH. The bill did not flop in my face once, just as advertised. If you are right on the split between Med and L/XL, go small. My fit is a little loose even after cinching the hat down. The brim is a tad bit narrow which caused a little sunburn on the neck and a goofy sweat drip right over my right eye.

Construction and materials were great----but I sent it back. I need a hat that passes moisture better in the heat and this hat doesn't do that. Protects like crazy, shields well, and the retention system is great. But I get hot and sweat and need moisture transfer. No dice with this hat.

Great hat -- lightweight, cool, stiff brim, and the convertible cord system gives you lots of options. Just completed a couple days of hiking with this hat. It was nice to have a hat that provided protection from the elements with a brim that did not fold in the wind. The hat fit nicely and was very comfortable.

I was originally mailed an Osprey in error. The company promptly exchanged for the Phoenix. I have used the hat for tennis,hiking and boating. I love this hat. It adjusts easily to different needs. I am to going order the sun mullet next. I would love to try one of the other things being hats they make in the future

Just went on a 2.5 day ocean fishing trip. This hat works as advertised. Love the multiple position strap set up. If you do not need the the clearance I would recommend a model with a little larger side and back brim for more sun protection. The fixed front brim is perfect. Comfortable, light weight and great fit.
