Beautifully written, horribly haunting verse
My copy of “Unbound” arrived from Amazon today. I ordered this book after my son's fourth-grade teacher asked me about how this work based on enslaved people's narratives may fit within a fourth-grade curriculum on social justice.I have barely been able to put the book down. This work’s horribly, haunting, beautifully written verses make the tragedies of slavery tangible and take the reader on a heart-wrenching, tension-filled journey. Before reading this novel, I was unaware that indigenous and enslaved people forged lasting communities of freedom in swamps. It would be a weighty undertaking to guide fourth graders through this book to teach about the brutal injustices of the economic system based on slavery that ensnared both perpetrators and victims, but I highly recommend doing so.

Age appropriate.
Easy for my 11-year old to read. This book continued to engage her interest in this historic issue, which she focuses on as an equitable social issue.

Symbolism
I found the symbolism Burg used to be extremely interesting and deepened my understanding of the history while also adding emotion to the text.

Unbound
This was an awesome book. It shows the POV of Grace and het family and how they were treated. It shows what they went through to just not have to be a slave. That is why I rate this book a five star.

Great MG Book in Verse
This historical fiction is a beautifully written story in verse with a unique POV. It was such a quick read I found myself staying up late to finish it.

Good book
Amazing book hard to read because it's about slaves and it made it a bit depressing for me but it was still good.👍🏼
