Q: How many hours or minutes is this effective for?

This all depends on the load the filter is taking. If the environment is highly toxic, the time the filter takes to "fill-up" is shorter than in other environments. Please see the OSHA guidelines as well as manufacturer documentation. One notable aspect of vapor and particle filters which seal around the users face or mouth is they become more difficult to breath through as the filters become loaded with the toxins or particles for which they are being used. Further, there is a specified expiration date on filters to ensure use falls within the specified studies used to verify their effectiveness.

Activated charcoal is what this cartridge offers an activated charcoal is not the best medium for absorbing chlorine, or hydrogen-chloride. It is best for absorbing aromatic hydrocarbons. The problem with 40mm based respirator cart4ridges is there is a very narrow selection available, which is pretty much just a particle filter and an activated charcoal cartridge. However, the good news is this mask comes with a bayonet connector that will receive a 3M cartridge, which will allow one to purchase a 3M 60926 multi-gas cartridge which will trap and neutralize acid gases, such as hydrogen chloride, as well VOCs, which is what I use this mask for as I am treating my COPD with this cartridge and mask.
