Old school experience!
Tegner is one of those rare martial artists that really has a knack for explaining technique. Judo technique passed on with the perceptions of a gifted Judoka. Really helpful during my first few months of Judo

From a historical view point, this is one of the first books written by the late Bruce Tegner.
Even though the late Bruce Tegner has often been criticized by the traditional martial arts community; nevertheless, his numerous books on Judo, Jujitsu, Karate, stick fighting and law enforcement tactics have been read by millions of people. One of the things I always admired about Bruce Tegner was his practical common sense approach to explaining the martial arts. He did not buy into the mystical and irrational aspects of some martial arts.He is actually known for orginally being a Judo black belt expert and the information in this book is probably more accurate than some of his other texts on karate and other self-defense arts. He even developed his own self-defense system called Jukado. He took techniques from Judo, Karate and Aikido and combined them in his program. This book, Judo, Beginner to Black Belt, covers all the basic falls, throws, ground techniques and chokes required to advance in the art of Judo. Like any martial art, you cannot learn Judo from merely reading book. However, this book when used in combination with training under a Judo instructor can be of great value. Your Judo instructor will explain the finer points and the specific details of performing all the basic Judo techniques. In conclusion, the real value of this book is in its historical importance in my opinion. Even though the late Bruce Tegner's Judo techniques do not show the greatest form; nevertheless, there is some very good practical information in this text.Rating: 3 Stars. Joseph J. Middle of the pack, nice contrasting Gi colors.
The first thing I noticed in this book was how outdated some of the material was. For instance they demonstrate a incorrect way of break falling that sent shivers down my spine thinking somebody at home would learn this method. What the book does positively. Covers all core throwing techniques with a section on counters and combinations. I also might mention that many Judo books have the Judoka both wearing the same colored gi which sometimes give the appearance that they assimilating. Bruce's book has Judoka wearing different colored gi's which is a nice touch. The newaza like most Judo books is spartan at best. A couple of pins, the chokes we all know and love, you basic armlocks and that is about it. In a sea of Judo books this comes in the middle somewhere, but I will admit I have picked up a couple combinations from this manual and have used them successfully in randori.
