Decent player, reported problems are minimal
The sound quality of the player is FINE ... there are two things that are most likely the cause of many/all bad review claims about sound quality. The EQ settings do degrade the audio quality, so leaving the EQ off is best - the "pure"/unaltered audio quality is perfect. The headphones that came with the unit are clearly sub-par, just plugging in decent headphones reveals that the audio output is fine. When I received the unit, I initially had some kind of weird issue with it reading discs ... it would only play the first song, and stop halfway - I'd have to push "stop" to get the player going again. Oddly, that cleared up and hasn't happened at all since those first 2-3 incidents. The player is a bit "chunky" ... thicker than I'd imagined, but its not so much as to be a deal-breaker. Its interesting that it has rubber plugs for all jacks, contributing to it being "water resistant" I guess. When open, the lid is a bit heavy so the unit won't sit flat on its back when open (it rocks back on the lid hinge because of the lid's weight). The battery compartment isn't the best-designed ... the metal contacts are awkwardly positioned, which makes it seem like they may eventually break off when pressing batteries in to seat them. I can't tell of they may have been bent by previous owner, though (I bought the player used).I've owned lots of portable CD players - this one is middle-of-the-road. I like some things about it, and there's no deal-breakers for me.

Better Options...
I bought this CD player three months ago. First of all, if you're considering buying this, definitely treat yourself to a nicer pair of headphones, the ones that come with this are murder on your ears. Secondly, within a month of getting this, the locking mechanism got screwed up and now it opens randomly- an annoying interruption. Granted, this player has taken some pretty hard hits- I'm not the kindest master. In general, though, it feels pretty crappy- it's plastic, not metal. Also (small things), the volume's really annoying, it doesn't go up nearly as high as I'd like, and it's too big. The anti-skip is this player's saving feature. I've never had any skips; it works great. Despite that for $60 there are better options out there. I'd recommend some of Panasonic's other similarly priced players, of course Sony's usually good too. I actually really liked the Sony D-EJ100PS (I stole my friend's while she was on vacation), it's a lot smaller, has a much longer battery life and it too doesn't skip (ever). It's flaw is that it also has a low volume problem... *shrugs* maybe that's just me.

Worst CD player I've ever used
I just used this CD player for the first time last night and I was absolutely appalled at how HORRIBLE the sound on this piece of crap was. If you hate music, or if you don't know what you are talking about, then this is the CDplayer for you. I played 3 different CDs on this thing and they all sounded terrible (1 was Foo Fighters, 1 was Fischerspooner, and one was a CD-R cd that I made). In almost every song on all of the CDs the vocals were completely unintelligible so that you could only hear the music (which was almost entirely trebble - and the "Bass Boost" feature on this thing is a joke, it barely did a thing). And as for the CD-R disc, I made sure to look for a player that could play these CDs, and yeah, uh, it'll play them - as in, you press play and it does something, but as far as the sound - it makes all the songs sound like they're being played through a tank of water (all gargled and quiet with little electronic screeches and beeps - and I had listened to this particular disc many other times in my stereo and car and it sounded fine until I put it in this crappy thing). So if you just want a CD player that looks good on a shelf, this is for you, but other than that, you might as well take $60 out of your wallet and throw it in the trash can (oh and don't forget shipping).
