Advanced Rowing: International perspectives on high performance rowing

Comprehensive for elite and high-level clubs, with many areas of application for juniors/masters/veterans programs
I've found this book to be very enlightening about how coaches from different elite and major club programs have surprisingly similar objectives and methods for coaching their own programs. I think the sections about Training and Conditioning and Technical Approach are especially interesting and worth reading several times. The chapter dedicated to Training Intensity for Rowing is eye-opening.Hearing from top coaches whose results speak for themselves (e.g. Robin Williams, Johan Flodin, and many others) provides a lot of behind-the-scenes information of what works for them, and why. Most of those insights can be applied to other types of programs, like juniors and masters/veterans. Outstanding book.

Truly for the advanced tower
A book for anyone who rows. Well written and truly for the advanced tower. (Son is a rower at a Big 10 school).

There are some conflict between the advise the individual coaches provided but overall one of the finest texts on the technical aspects of rowing
This is a very well researched and edited book. There are some conflict between the advise the individual coaches provided but overall one of the finest texts on the technical aspects of rowing. Would strongly recommend this text.

It reads like a scientific dissertation
My club just ordered this book for the boathouse, and I had high hopes, but it doesn’t translate well to our level (American masters/juniors club rowing). Aside from the very limited audience of top level international coaches, I’m not sure who this book is really intended for. It reads like a scientific dissertation. There are a few practical items, but overall it’s a dull text book hiding behind an attractive soft cover.

A good read and a reference
Advanced RowingThis is a great new book for both athletes and coaches edited by Flood and Simpson – in fact it could have been titled Coaching Advanced RowingIt starts with four chapters by international coaches followed by three by university and club coaches some of whom you may not have heard of but all with interesting perspectives, something to suit all. Usefully, the chapters all follow a similar format: training environment, training and conditioning, athlete selection and talent development, coach athlete relationship, technical approach, support services and technology, fine tuning for racing, final thoughts.Part 3 Techniques and drills starts with a chapter by Robin Williams on rowing technique which finishes with a useful four pages on skills and drills. As a coach it's nice to to know you are doing some things right for the right reasons and to learn some new ones.Simpson has written two chapters: Training Intensity for rowing which looks at what NZ and Australia have been doing as well as research and learning from other sports with a useful summary at the end to help design your programme; Nutrition where he advises using specialist nutritionists and dieticians for those at the top. There is a useful chapter by Lawton on the S&C programme in NZ which recommends individualised and all year weights programmes. Draper provides a practical and cautionary guide to using technology – getting the correct set-up, avoiding errors and appropriate analysis and interpretation. Finally the book finishes with an amusing and informative history piece by Dodd. Both a good read and a reference book.

Advanced, up to date and excellent
If you are interested in staying up to date in high performance rowing, whether senior of junior, then this is a must-read with chapters written by some of the best coaches in the world. There's a lot of insight into some of the training from the best HP programmes in the world. If you are a recreational rower or coach, then there may not be so much of relevance to you. It helps of you already have a decent understanding of training principles and physiology, but it's fairly easy to follow even if you don't.

Must read
Great insight on how high performance rowing functions at International, University and Club level. An insight on school and junior level rowing would have been a great addition.
