Did exactly what I needed!
I just got a roku that only has hdmi output for audio, and have a somewhat older audio receiver that only has toslink digital audio inputs. I already had a 1-4 hdmi splitter with an empty output. I connected the empty output to this little adapter and was able to have a single audio input now to my receiver. Previously I had separate toslink connections from each av device to my receiver, and hdmi connections (via the splitter) to multiple displays. WIth this adapter I was able to remove the individual toslink cables, and just have a single cable from this adapter to my receiver. It makes setup much easier.

Doesn't support 1920x1200
So my display is a 1920x1200 monitor that has DVI and HDMI input. When I directly connect it via HDMI I am able to output 1920x1200. When I place this device inline to extract the audio the source only sees the display as capable of 1920x1080 but otherwise reads the EDID correctly. This results in a blurry picture and acceptable audio output to my speakers.This device seems like it would be acceptable for a more standard resolution but it is not right for me.

Fantastic!
I seldom if ever write a review, but this product totally exceeded all of my expectations. As an audiophile, I was not happy with the sound quality using Bluetooth to connect my computer to my audiophile preamp. I was looking for a wired to optical connection and found it with this product. The sound difference versus Bluetooth was incredible. In my case I was connecting a Mac Mini with the Thunderbolt output and was providing an optical input into my Rotel Preamp. This device did the trick! Absolutely perfect, first try on the hook up. Thank you, Thank you!!

Worked well at first, broke after a little over a year
Work as advertised without any issues. Then after about 15 months, the audio jack suddenly became detached from the circuit board.

Does NOT work with ARC.
Please note this does NOT work on HDMI ARC (audio return channel) where your audio from your tv is run through HDMI to your receiver.

Exactly what I needed
Works perfectly. Now I can break out the audio from the HDMI cable so I can run it to my SoundBar. I had not known that there was such a thing till I got this. I love it.

No video
Would not work with xbox. Tried with 3 hdmi cables that worked without this but could not get any video to the monitor with this box hooked up.

Was a dud.
I don't know what I expected. It was pretty cheap. And mine didn't work. Hope yours is better.
