THE girl group. The one with the beehives up to there. The one with the attitudes up to there, too. The one with the lead singer that makes the guys dreamy and the girls envious. The one with the BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. BAM. The one that inspired a generation of women to find their independence. The Ronettes. Everything You Wanted To Know About The Ronettes….But Were Afraid To Ask is an 80 minute look at the most famous and notorious girl group in their heyday, featuring all the chart hits, rarities and more. Never have Ronnie, Estelle & Nedra been compiled or anthologized in a more comprehensive overview. 27 tracks from 1963-1969.

The Most Comprehensive
The Ronettes were one of the most important and successful acts produced by Phil Spector, renowned for his rich elaborate and highly appealing overblown sound, known as Deep Wall Of Sound. They were among his clients on his US Philles label. This is their most comprehensive CD with 27 tracks, on an official down under Teensville label who always give very good sound. The sound quality here is excellent throughout, except on the last track which is a demo. There are three previously unreleased tracks including that last track which is such a great song that the sound quality is a pity. Out of those other two tracks, both of which give much better sound, Close Your Eyes is an excellent track, but the other track, Padre is plain average, although there are so many great tracks here. There were three previously unreleased tracks that appeared on their Sony label CD, Be My Baby; The Very Best Of The Ronettes that have been duplicated here, likewise, three further previously unreleased tracks on the various artists now deleted box set which Phil compiled himself, Back To Mono - Woman In Love, Keep On Dancing & Soldier Baby Of Mine. But another track here, Girls Can Tell, as far as I know, has only been on a bootleg single. But I don't know where the track Baby Let's Be Lovers has previously been released. There are nine stereos here. One of them, Walking In The Rain has appeared in stereo on unofficial compilations without the overdubbed storm effects. You may find it on Youtube. They recorded six further stereos of which the songs are not here. Three of them, So Young, What'd I Say & their original album track version of Chapel Of Love appeared on their compilation CD All The Hits on the Charly label which I reviewed on Amazon, and may be an official bootleg, as a few tracks there sound dubbed from disc. The other three of which were Christmas songs on the various artists Phil Spector produced Christmas album are playable in stereo on Youtube. The other track of theirs not here is a surprisingly good old B side, Blues For My Baby, which is on that All The Hits CD, but in mono. But what created part of that Spector sound is that he transferred the basic tracks on to a second tape, and added the heavy reverb onto that second tape, usually in mono as he preferred mono, but a bit of sound clarity would be lost. But because the stereos are from undubbed tapes, obviously they sound clearer, but part of that Deep Wall Of Sound just isn't there. Some of the stereos are a bit shorter than their mono counterparts which are on that Sony compilation where all the tracks are in mono. This may be because when remastering, as the stereo session tapes may not fade at the end, and may continue until the musicians stop playing, maybe when remastering, the engineers had to fade the recordings themselves, and did so a bit too early on some tracks. But for the sake of the Spector buffs, all three albums that The Righteous Brothers recorded for Philles from 1964-65 have now at long last been reissued, but only as MP3 downloads. They include You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin', Just Once In My Life & Back To Back. Apart from an odd track, the music is all excellent. Phil Spector produced some of the tracks on the albums, Bill Medley, the rest, but occasionally got near to the Spector sound. But with the first of these, make sure you are dowloading the original album with tracks like Look At Me, Soul City & There's A Woman, originally on the B side of the single, as the duo have had loads of compilations out under that title containing tracks from various singles and albums, some from much later years, long after they split from Spector. Also on Youtube, if you print Phil Spector Sessions and click on it, you will find alternate takes of loads of his produced hits, and instrumental backing tracks without added vocals. Once you start searching, you may not be able to stop.

Stereo on 9 tracks
A very comprehensive collection and to me sounds good. Not sure how 'official' this is as there is no copyright information or any detail on the actual tracks. If you have the official best of collection then add this and you must have nearly all the Ronettes recordings for the 1963 to 1969 period. Some tracks do vary in volume indicating they come from different sources and a couple are slightly below top quality but overall a good buy.

A Reasonable Collection Including Some Interesting Rarities
It is a reasonably good collection and one which should make most fans and collectors happy. One should always recall the circumstances under which these recordings were originally made: Phil Spector loved MONO rather than stereo; he created music for tiny round 45 rpm records that often played in jukeboxes or on AM radio stations and so the sound was both somewhat muddy and shrill, but always a kind of cacophony. Given all of that, the sound on many of these tracks ---clearly from a variety of sources-- is not bad. Much of the stereo is good and the balance, while uneven, is not intolerable. The real gem of course is to hear the much anticipated "unreleased" songs of which there are three here. "Padre" is reasonably good but certainly would not have been a great hit of the sort that "Be My Baby" was. "Close Your Eyes" sounds like it could have, should have been released at some point and fit in well with the overall catalog of the group. The last, "Someday (Baby)" sounds very incomplete, whether it was a rough take (demo) or a run-through, it does not have either the quality or the attraction of many other songs by the group. In short, it is easily understood as a previous reject, but is still interesting to hear after all these years. I would recommend this for collectors and fans and for anyone who is curious about the Ronettes and does not already own a collection.

it's great to hear them although they have not been mixed ...
My lovely Ronettes, yet another compilation but with 3 new unheard tracks, it's great to hear them although they have not been mixed down. The disc it self is a mix of volumes some tracks sounding better than others. But Ill give it the 5 for the new tracks and the speed it came.

It's Ronnie and her crew
What more is there to say. You like the Ronettes. There's plenty of collections-this is another. I've got lots but I bought this anyway. Listening in the car the other day I fell in love with her again so well worth getting hold of. The voice, the Ronettes sound (due thanks to Phil). You can see why she drove him mad.If you haven't listened before or have just heard the standards this is decent collection to expand your knowledge.

Three Previously Unreleased Songs on CD by the Ronettes
I've been obsessed with the Ronettes since I was 20 years old. I bought this collection for the unreleased songs. "Podray" is my favourite of the unreleased songs. All the other songs by the girls are included including "Here I Sit", "Be My Baby", "Baby I Love You" and "Everything Under the sun". The CD comes packaged in cardboard packaging. Sadly "(Someday) Baby" is transferred poorly and sounds muffled on this CD.

Recommended!!
Best collection of Ronettes music on the market now. Good sound quality and always great to hear lesser known recordings, some never released before. It's a must buy. The cover alone is worth it!!
