Still great after all these years
If any one wants a non HD camcorder for semi-pro use, this is the one. I have used the XM1 for more years than I can remember. The Menu system is very user friendly, the optics are great, the weight is balanced great. It does not use a touch screen which I still think is a plus. What more is there to say this was and is one of the best amateur videos ever made.

Canon DM-XM1 Professional Mini DV Camcorder
I purchased this camcorder for my first holiday to Orlando the day before my flight so I did not have a great deal of time to get used to it but I found all the standard controls to be comfortably situated.Battery performance from the standard battery was good, It lasted around three quarters of the day but I would recommend investing in the higher capacity battery. The camera has a top control panel in the handle that has the record stop/start button duplicated which is very handy when using the secondary screen on the side for taking hip shots. The camera comes with a remote control that duplicates nearly all the controls that are available on the camera itself that is good if you want to mount the camera on a tripod. The optical image stabiliser is very good for long telephoto shots picture shake is kept to a minimum, whilst talking about optical quality when videos are replayed though a TV with S video input you would be hard pressed to differentiate from broadcast programs.I found sound quality to be excellent when plugged in to my home HI FI system. What is very nice about this camera that all the menus are easily accessed from a thumb wheel that also double’s like a mouse button to scroll and select functions.Build quality is very good it has a very solid feel about it whilst not being over heavy I was able to carry it around all day long with no problems.Overall I am very happy with this bit of kit.

better than sony
i have used the xm1 and the sony hc1e. the best is the xm1 . the sony is good but the xm1 is better. second hand they both cost around the same. the sony is hi def but there is not that much difference, the canon is much more user friendly.

Top class unit
We are used to using broadcast units (Sony UVW100) but there are times when a small high quality unit is called for. We have used both Sony and Canon (XM1) and although the pictures quality is excellent on both units, the XM1 has the edge as far as we are concerned. The picture quality is little short of broadcast and the image stabilizer is fantastic when zoom is being used. The single area of complaint, although small, is the microphone. In this one area the Sony VX1000 has the edge. All things considered, the XM1 is as close as it gets to a full pro camera and easy to use. Great little camera
