Poltergeist III

Five Stars for Heather O'Rourke's Performance
Poltergeist III was an enjoyable film, but I must credit this mostly to the late Heather O'Rourke. Her performance in this film was just as captivating as those in the previous Poltergeist films of the 1980s. As in Poltergeist and Poltergeist II: The Other Side, O'Rourke's portrayal of Carol Anne in Poltergeist III made me want to reach out and protect her. The scene featuring Carol Anne under hypnosis was perhaps the highlight of this entire film. O'Rourke was a natural, brilliant actress, even at age 11.The beginning of Poltergeist III had a very good pace IMHO, but it did slow considerably after Carol Anne's disappearance into the "puddle," and I would imagine viewers grew tired of hearing the name Carol Anne uttered repeatedly throughout the film. Nevertheless, I was delighted by the reappearance of Tangina, once again played by the remarkable Zelda Rubinstein, as well as Tom Skerritt's performance as Bruce Gardner, a very down-to-earth character who genuinely loved his wife's niece as much as his own daughter. The music in this film, though much different than in the previous Poltergeist films, was satisfyingly eerie...and also moving. The softer instrumentals during the end credits may bring a tear to your eye as the film's dedication to Heather O'Rourke is scrolled across the screen. There are wonderful special features in this Collector's Edition Blu-ray disc. The interview with leading actress Nancy Allen was especially interesting. Even though the character Patricia Gardner wasn't too fond of her niece Carol Anne, Ms. Allen had nothing but positive things to say about the actress who portrayed her. Heather O'Rourke was wise beyond her years, she said, very professional, a calming influence on the set, and more. Allen also shares her memories of Heather's funeral and having to re-film the ending of Poltergeist III with a stand-in for O'Rourke. Speaking of which... The original ending is also featured on this disc, albeit without the audio dialogue. I can't help but wish certain elements of the original ending were inserted into the final cut, such as Scott's reemergence and the family, with O'Rourke instead of the stand-in, lovingly huddled together inside Carol Anne's room.RIP Heather O'Rourke (1975-1988)
