Great characters!
This book gave me a much better understanding for the plight of the jews. Zionism was born out of the tremendous persecutions directed toward them over the centuries. Uris does a great job with characterization. these are some of the richest character I have ever encountered.Believe me, nothing shallow about them. I did have a little difficulty with the book,s plot; he seems to bounce around quite a bit.I sometimes would get lost as to what decade we were in. Over all, a wonderful book!

Another Uris Treasure
Again, Leon Uris hits home with his excellent prose, and a story which grips the reader and brings him or her into the lives of the characters. I have always read Uris and found an immediate connection with the characters, who he brings to life in such a beautiful way and makes you care about. THe plot is , as usual, well designed and well written, historical and well researched. I may be biased as Leon Uris has always impressed me and I've read and re-read his hooks and never fail to connect with them.

Review of Mitla Pass
The book was well written but not one of Uris’ best. The book covers very little of the 1956 Israeli Arab war. Instead it is a saga of a Jewish family from czarist Russia to World War II and beyond. The main character is a Jewish writer flawed by an overpowering fear of failure that culminates at Mitla Pass. I suspect that it might be a loosely based autobiography of Leon Uris. A good read but not in the same league as Exodus, Armageddon or Mila 18.

Excellent Character Development
A portion of the Israeli war of 1956 is the central theme of the novel. However, the book intersperses that with indepth character development, often going back several generations. The book shines a bright light on the Jewish plight in Russia and Poland, as well as Germany, and into the pre-Israel hardships in Palestine. Mr. Uris knows that of which he writes.I gave this book four stars, and not five, because, at times, it seems there is too much detail to keep up with. But the results were worth it upon completion.

Fast paced and very insightful about Jewish culture at different times, in different countries, and personalities. Read it in two days.

Mitra Pass
Fabulous!!! As always, his mature books are heart rending, raw, earthly, painful demonstration of dysfunctional relationships at home, and jubilant depictions of people giving their life for a cause.

good but not an easy read.
The book was much more than I had expected. It deals with the Mitla Pass and the Israeli army taking that pass but it deals more with the life and history of the family of Gideon Zadok. From the struggle of his great grandfather in Russia, Belarus and Poland to the final trek to the United States and the families struggles to survive here. His family had a host of interesting characters they were Natan Zadok and his wife Hannah ,their children and grandchildren, The struggle to maintain their Judaism and family control over all of the members. Gideon the main character struggles with his marriage and with his adultery and his goal to write another great novel. Occasionally I wished the story had been less involved for it sometimes felt like separate books or a whole load of short stories put together and separated by chapters.

Maßlos ausgewalzter Familienseich
Erwartet hatte ich ein blendendes Buch wie "Exodus". Bekommen habe ich eine schier endlose Familiengeschichte mit einem kaum erkennbaren Bezug zur Geschichte Israels. Also: Wer Familiengeschichten mag, wird hier reichlich bedient.

A classic
A Leon Uris autobiography? Interesting from that point of view but at its best describing the fear of fighting superior numbers but successfully. Vivid descriptions
