Great debut novel with lots of funny frustrating awkward teen ...
Great debut novel with lots of funny frustrating awkward teen girl moments. I recommend highly. My daughter and I both read it and enjoyed talking about what happened to Rani and why. I won't give any spoilers, but a nicely done book for teens that address many young teen issues, fitting in, divorce of parents, male attention wanted and unwanted. Great read fresh and refreshing

Treat Yourself to a Great Read
Totally awesome read! Highly recommend for anyone interested in exploring through an entertaining and engaging story, the complexities of teen internal struggles complicated by the intersections of cultural diversity, place and family disfunction.

THE BEST BOOK EVER
Rani Patel is an incredible life changing book. I couldn't put it down. Recommended for real- hard core- honest people that aren't afraid of truth. I'm chomping at the bit for a sequel...after you read it- you'll be hooked!

She's smart, she's her own kind of beautiful
Well written and heartfelt account of a young woman struggling to fit into a society where she doesn't feel she belongs. in this case, it's being the lone Indian girl on a small Hawaaian island. She's smart, she's her own kind of beautiful, and she's a rapper. none of this is going to help her assimilate. or so she thinks. Rani Patel struggels against the culture of her Indian born mother and father, and struggles with the deeply hidden family secrets as well. But rap opens up her world, and it turns out she's a survivor as well. Set in 1991, the language of the rap culture was almost more difficult for me to "get" than the meanings of the Indian language and slang. Most of these were, at least, covered in the useful glossary in the back. But it may just be that I am ancient.

This smart book is full of nuance and layers
This smart book is full of nuance and layers. Hip-hop and Indian culture with a Hawaiian setting make it unique and unforgettable. What I particularly liked about this one is how complicated Rani's relationship with her father is. His abuse is handled deftly and the complications in Rani being a victim of incest are well-thought out. This book also speaks to cultural issues that are important and add to a much-needed diverse landscape in publishing. Fans of Gabi: A Girl in Pieces will adore Rani.

Teenager loved it
I got this book for my teenage daughter on the strength of the book cover copy -- an excerpt with crackling language and a strong feminist take. My daughter, who regularly at one time would read an entire novel in a day or night, is now one with YouTube, social media, etc. but she read this in one night. Loved it. So I have no idea what it is about but it must have been damn good.

Really liked it. Interesting setting
Got this book for free from a friend. Really liked it. Interesting setting: Indian girl on a small Hawaiian island. Not always an (emotionally) easy read. I probably wouldn't buy it because I don't buy much YA but I recommend it for teens.

Sonia Patel’s psychiatric training at Stanford shows in this young adult novel.
Sonia Patel’s psychiatric training at Stanford shows in this young adult novel. She is able to write a novel in the eyes of a young adult who is around drug abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, etc. In this novel we experience the trauma alongside Rani, but we also learn how to stop the cycle of abuse, notice self-inflicted patterns of masochism, and how to heal. When Rani dived into her art to heal her trauma alongside her ancestor’s. This was all translated into a fictional format that is excellent for the Young Adult readership, especially for those who need this book the most. It will be one that I recommend people to sell at my bookstore.

Music as a healing process
This book was hard to read. Not because of how it was written, but because of the subject matter. The strength of the main character was something I wish I could say that I had during my abuse. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful read and I recommend it to any and all others. It was heavy in material and glorious in the way it portrayed the growth of the main character.
