A breathlessly great read!
They say that the sign of a good book is one "that you can't put down.". Having just finished "Extinction Edge", I must disagree. I found that I HAD to put this book down because I needed a break! Not from bad writing or terrible characters, as is often the case. Rather, I needed to put the book down purely to recover myself; I needed time to draw breath and relax my tension. This is an (almost unbearably) gripping second book in this trilogy. I refuse to give any spoilers so will let others discover the plot when they buy the book for themselves, which I would heartily recommend. However, I will say that it is well written - more unusual than you'd expect with this genre! The characters are both complex and believable and I found myself identifying with quite a few of them. The scenes in which Beckham and Horn are away from Plum Island are dreadful in their suspense - "will they return?". "Will Horn be reunited with his girls?". I wanted to shout at them as they raced down the stairs trying to get to Steam Beast in advance of the advancing hordes. And I wanted to engage in dialogue with Kate in an effort to find a solution. "Come on, Kate, surely there is SOMETHING you can do? What about the light sensitivity? Can't we exploit that?". All utterly ridiculous responses for a grown woman but totally understandable when you find yourself in the grip of this book. All I can say in conclusion to any prospective purchasers in that this is a book well worth reading. And, in conclusion to the author, I would say, please don't do anything else other than write the next instalment. I'm not sure I can wait until the summer to find out what happens! So... don't sleep, don't stop for food or refreshment breaks and definitely don't do anything that takes you away from your writing - Kate, Beckham, Horn and I are desperate to find out what happens!

simply brilliant
Book 2 of the so far awesome Extinction Cycle series, and Nicholas Sansbury Smith throws you right back into the thick of the action with Reed Beckham and Team Ghost. The scary thing is you can easily imagine the US (or Russia or Korean) military trying to develop such a virus, the action is relentless and frighteningly real, and not everyone makes it to the end (one thing I like about this author is that none of the characters are really safe). The team find a safe haven, but is it really safe? Do they find their families alive? Well to find out you’ll just have to read it to find out, you won’t regret it!I really wish Amazon (or Netflix) would do a tv series of these books, they’d make awesome watching!

Still going good
I have really enjoyed the second instalment of the Extinction series. It's like reading a big blockbuster movie, lots of action, no lull in the story at all. I found it a real page turner. Anyone who likes apocalypse, full action zombie type books will really enjoy it. Looking forward to the next instalment.

Human kind... the end???
I didn't write a review for Bk 1, however you might consider this for them both. Having created a vaccine against the original disease, what the didn't expect was the side effects it would have on some of the infected. They are called the Variants. The team must now battle a new enemy, one that has been born from the cure of the original disease. The first book was gripping, the second has maintained the flow of narrative and action. These aren't your average apocalyptic zombie novels. Can mankind withstand the new invasion, or will the succeed in wiping out this threat? I loved it and don't want to spoil this too much for anyone, but if you're after a thrill ride with non-stop action and some meat to the characters, the "Extinction" series has pulled this off. Can't wait for part three.

Just as engrossing !
Had to start reading this straight after I had finished the first book. This had me hooked because of the first book and I have to say I never lost the interest. The book had my imagination working overtime as I could just hear the screams from the victims, I could hear the clipping sound as the creatures climbed the walls, I could the tension and fear with every person trapped. Not many books can pull me in that well but this book did and I can not wait to read the next instalment.I would suggest anyone who wants to be drawn in should give this series a read and I don't believe you'll be disappointed !

Brilliant
Having read the first book I just had to buy the second and I wasn't disappointed it had me on the edge of my seat I have just finished Edge of extinction and its 3am I need to go to bed but couldn't put the book down Will have to get the 3rd book and the 4th this would make a fantastic film, the only thing I'm a bit annoyed about is that it has been written over 4 books I don't normally buy books like that prefer them to have a proper finish but there so good I just have to know the end.

Truly Amazing! What a page turner!!!
Extinction Cycle is one of the best if not the best Post-Apocalyptic Sci-fi series I have ever read. I started this series on March 13, 2020 with Extinction Horizon and finished with Extinction Darkness from Season Two on June 30, 2020. There are supporting stories that I read with this series and they will not leave you disappointed. This review is the same for each book but trust me when I say you will not want to put these books down when you start them. They are truly amazing.

Well written, fast pace and military vocabulary make this sequel as good as the first book. For foreigners students like me this is a great book to read. Advanced English is recommended although.

Fast-paced, innovative and highly engaging sci-fi post-apocalyptic thriller
The only reason I haven't reviewed this book already is because I'm deep into Orbs III: Redemption. This is what happens when an outstanding author puts out two books in two different series close in time to each other, both of which are excellent. Not that I'm complaining! Bottom line: I highly recommend this book to fans of sci-fi, post-apocalyptic stories, military sci-fi and even thrillers outside of these genres.Extinction Edge picks up where Extinction Horizon (EH) left off; I appreciate that NSS left you wanting more, but not with a frustrating cliff hanger. My thoughts were "uh-oh, this is going to get good". And Extinction Edge (EE) does not disappoint. It has been one of the very few books that I've truly anxiously waited to read. The action picks up immediately and we start learning more about the Variants and their biology...and evolution. These aspects of the creatures are fascinating given how the Variants came to be (no spoilers!) and leaves a lot of room for creativity in every aspect of these creatures' behavior and ecology (sorry, the science geek in me just escaped). One of the best aspects of NSS's writing is the innovative plot lines connected to current science. I mentioned this in an earlier review for EH, but NSS's stories are similar to Michael Crighton's, but with a rebooted edge to them. An analogy would be how the Daniel Craig James Bond movies are updated, edgier, and more intense (not that Crighton's works are not intense). You get the point.A lot is happening on Plum Island as well, and we learn more about the history behind what is happening as well as welcome new characters into the fold. I really enjoy the pace at which the stakes are rising - not so fast that the story starts to feel unrealistic but fast enough to keep you entertained and engaged in the story. This is another one of the best aspects of NSS's writing; the pacing. You really do not want to put the book down. Between the Extinction Series and the Orbs Series, this has resulted in dishes going unwashed, dust bunnies largely comprised of dog hair floating around the floors, and inadvertently sleeping on the sofa on weeknights (waking up with my sleeping Kindle in my hand). As others have mentioned, I am also enjoying the character development tremendously. MSgt Beckham and Dr. Lovato (especially) are both coming into their own while dealing with what is happening around them and it's really gratifying to see these characters' development. I'm also a fan of Fitz, for a lot of reasons, and am glad that he is more involved in the storyline. I hope and anticipate that this continues into the third installment, and I'm also very much looking forward to when Beckham's group is all back together at 100%.For lack of a better way to describe it, the plot is "maturing" in EE. The pacing does not let up from the first book, and the situation becomes more complex both from the standpoint of the external threat and from the standpoint of what is happening on Plum Island. Sometimes "middle" stories end up being extensions of the first story and clear set-ups for the last story, which makes the ending predictable and both the middle and last book less gratifying. Not so here. The story is evolving and developing in innovative and interesting ways, and there is absolutely no prediction inherent in EE. I can't wait for Extinction Age to come out, and I don't say that often. Although I just said it above regarding EE. Truly, a testament to NSS's ability to create an engaging world with engaging characters and deliver a story that hooks you and keeps you. I highly recommend Extinction Edge and the Extinction Series more generally. If you like NSS's work and have not yet done so, I would also highly recommend the Orbs Series. I plan on catching up NSS's other works (Biomass) in between Orbs III and Extinction Age and will review these as well.Note: I received an advanced copy of this book (unexpectedly!) free of charge and was asked to provide an honest review in return. Not only is it my pleasure to review EE (and I would have reviewed it anyway), but I did also purchase the book to help support the author's work.

Rattling Good Yarn
I read a lot and I write a lot. Unfortunately most of what I write is dull, colourless and boring technical stuff and there are times when I wish that I had the imagination to write a "Rattling Good Yarn" but sadly, I lack the imagination to do so.Mr. Sansbury Smith does not seem to be afflicted with such an impediment. I find that his extrapolation of given events is plausable, given the right conditions and the story line is charged with just the right amount of action, drama, excitement, suspense and humanity to make the reading of it a memorable and enjoyable experience.I have read both Extinction Horizon and Extinction Edge and I have enjoyed both. I look forward to reading Extinction Age when it is published and I am sure that I will enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed the previous two books in this series. If I may be so impertinent to say so: I found the writing to be grammatically correct and the spelling commendable, something which is sadly lacking in many publications.Well done Mr. Sansbury Smith, well done.
