Funny collection
I have no idea what Marvel was thinking during this period with the Avengers. The comic had risen to its absolute peak by issue #97 and then what did Marvel do? It changed the entire crew much to the comicโs detriment. The trio of writer Roy Thomas and artists Sal and John Buscema were replaced by Steve Englehart as story teller and a revolving door of drawers. For example, issue #98-100 was drawn by Barry Windsor-Smith. He was known for the Conan series. I think heโs an acquired taste. More importantly when compared to the greats that came before him, Windsor-Smith simply wasnโt up to the task. This was just a huge letdown. Some of the standout comics included in this volume are 102 where the Grim Reaper re-appears and attempts to manipulate the Vision to bring back his brother Simon Williams aka Power Man who provided the brain patterns for the android. That gets caught up in the Sentinels appearing who seize the Scarlet Witch, and the Trask family that created the mutant hunting robots in issue 103-104. The Grim Reaper and Power Man return in 107-108.The best story however is at the end when longtime Avengers' foe turned friend the Swordsman and his girlfriend the Mantis appear in 114-19. Mantis needs to find out who she really loves, and more importantly, whether she is the Celestial Madonna. That gets entwined with the Avengers-Defenders war that was caused by the scheming of Loki and Dormammu. This is one of the best struggles the Avengers went through in the 1970s and saves Essential Volume 5 from its earlier problems with new writers and artists.Marvel did a weird job with these issues. The first part of this book focuses upon Deadpool taking old SHIELD tech and weapons after the group went under with Hydra and selling them. Spider Man tries to stop him only to find out Chameleon has been impersonating Deadpool to steal his stuff. The middle story is really the highlight as its Peter Parker and Wade Wilson as old geriatrics in a retirement home. Then the end is back to the SHIELD weapons biz.Despite that itโs a good collection of comics with plenty of action and the retirement home story was hilarious.

Interesting arc, great art, and a good place to dive in to Spider-Man/Deadpool
This volume includes Spider-Man/Deadpool issues 23-28. For those who may not have kept up with the run, this is a great place to dive in as it kicks-off a new arc. Spidey and DP are on a bit of a "hiatus" from their bromantic partnership with the events of Secret Empire and the fact that Deadpool is on the outs with most of the heroes for what went down. This adds complications for Spider-Man, who feels compelled to take down DP, but feels conflicted because of their developed friendship and what Deadpool has done for him in the past (including pulling him out of purgatory (even though it was DP who put him there, but you know, comics.) Cue some chasing each other into the secret base of Tabula Rasa which is filled with lots of perils, as well as hidden motivations, and you have a fun, often funny, and fantastical ride for the mini-arc that runs from 23-25. (I love Chris Bachalo's art in these issues. It's creative and monstrous while often maintaining the underlying humor that lives beneath the surface in most SM/DP stories.)Issue 26 kicks off a side "future" story where Spidey and DP are oooooold, like really old, men living in an assisted living facility. This start of the "oldies" arc is AMAZING, with awesome art by Scott Hepburn. It's this mix of funny, sweet, and melancholy, as well as some tension since you realize that DP knows way more of what's going on than Old Man Spidey does.Issues 27-28 go back to the "present" where what started in the monstrous forests of Tabula Rasa continues as Deadpool tries to steal some high-tech SHIELD equipment, followed by chaos erupting in NYC as criminals like Kraven the Hunter are suddenly popping up, and Spidey/Deadpool find themselves fighting on the same side again. The mysteries started in this volume are still going in the current series (with #31 just released) so checking in here is a great place to catch what's happened so far, including the beginning of Old Men Spideypool, probably one of my favorite developments in this whole fun SM/DP series.
