Winner of the Palme d Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, Emir Kusturica s UNDERGROUND is a carnivalesque classic of wartime profiteering and betrayal. Marko (Miki Manojlovic ) and Blacky (Lazar Ristovski) are two suspicious characters who make their living on the black market by stealing arms to sell to the Yugoslav Partisans during WWII. They make a killing, but their relationship breaks down in the face of Natalija (Mirjana Jokovic ), an actress who bewitches them both. Their lust turns into a paranoid mania, and Marko makes the delirious decision to lock Blacky in an underground cellar, trying to convince him that the war is still going on outside, and that Blacky is safer to stay hidden, manufacturing arms there in secret (which Marko sells for a tidy profit). This outrageous deception carries on for 20 years, and the repercussions resound through the remainder of Yugoslav history.Special Features: *the DVD version includes 3 DVDs*the Blu-ray version includes 1 Blu-ray and 2 DVDs*ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS A COUNTRY - six part TV version of UNDERGROUND (327 minutes)*SHOOTING DAYS 1996 documentary on the making of UNDERGROUND*Booklet essay by Giorgio Bertellini, author of the monograph EMIR KUSTURICA*Behind-the-scenes Footage*Interviews with Cast and Crew*Trailer

OUTSTANDING!!!
Do not be dissuaded by its long duration. This film, often absurdist and surreal, is a masterful parody of opportunism, misinformation, and political manipulation. One of the best movies I've seen in ages (and I watch a LOT).

Awesome
This is an amazing film, one of the best foreign films ever made, one of war, betrayal, loss, and almost a strange, magical feel is in the whole film, like you’re watching a strange twisted fantasy play before you.

Fantastic film, a must see
One of my all time favorites. In a world of dour pretentious art films this one stands out as hilarious, insightful, moving, and jam-packed with creative brilliance.

Exceptional!
A bittersweet masterpiece! I had the opportunity to watch the tv adaptation of Kusturica's 'Time of the Gypsies' years ago. Therefore, I was so happy to find a copy of the 6-episode version of 'Underground'! What a treat!

Low-brow, overlong and tedious
Emir Kusturica played so brilliantly in the French movie "Farewell" (2009) that I thought any film he directed must be amazing.Well, yeah, it was – but for the wrong reasons. Low-brow mugging at the camera; questionable editing; crude and vulgar slapstick; making fun of old or disabled people; a complete inability to Get To The Point. What a waste. Don't recommend this at all.
