Brilliant book
My kids love history, and so do I. This book is a great way of telling a very difficult and tragic part of WW2, but in a way that the kids remember, learn about it, but are not scared by the terrible conditions the troops lived through. I particularly like the way the pages as you turned them flick between 1940 and the "modern day" (which is actually set in the 60s when the author was a boy) but the pictures are identical in set up so that you can see how the author's uncle got flashbacks to his WW2 experiences. For an adult reading this with your child, you can see the way it cleverly shows to trauma experienced by soldiers and how their lives are affected, but without scaring the reader, and it remains a very subtly moving and very personal story. A very well written book, worth every penny.

My father was at Dunkirk and have bought this for my future grandchildren. Beautiful book and tells the story of what these brave men went through so well without scaring young children.

Brilliantly view on history
This is a fantastic book and needs reprinting. We've had this book in the house for a number of years, and not until recently when my son became older did he start to understand this book. Having watched the film Dunkirk, in conjunction with this book my son who is autistic and takes things literally, found the combination of the story and the film together helped him to understand the emotional and factual parts of our recent history. This is a must for all children.

So poignant
The juxtaposition of the boy's freedom and the uncle's memories of Dunkirk are so poignant. Brilliant book.
