Product Description Seattle's preeminent piano trio, New Stories (pianist Marc Seales, bassist Doug Miller and drummer John Bishop), is back with a tribute to their predecessors and inspirations. Included are compositions by Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock in fresh interpretations filtered through the experiences of the intervening years. Here are also three original compositions growing out of the tradition. Three great saxophonists, Don Lanphere, Hans Teuber and Rick Mandyck, join New Stories singly, in pairs and one stunning group shot. This Music is So Fine, Get it While it's Still Available
How did this fine music not get in my Jazz Collection until now? That's what you'll ask yourself once you have it. This group of three plus the three added horns on various tracks is just wonderful. From the days of Jazz at Port Townsend in the nineties, the trio has developed a sensitivity in ways which exceed its function then as rhythm backing. Horns do a lovely job here with melodies they wrote. Rick Mandyk will squeeze your heart as well as Miles ever did on his under played ballad, Circle, with Bishop's lightly rolling cymbal thunder amid Miller's deepest voice on bass. Marc Seales really heard Herbie play this on Miles Smiles. That tune alone is worth the disc. BWTM! Miller's composition, After Letting Go, brings in the alto of Hans Teuber and tenor of Mandyk. What a lovely tune. The late NW Bird-era icon Don Lamphere lifts his soprano to the Van Huesen gem, Deep in a Dream, with a lovely classic Marc Seales effectively steals in background support. Grab your girl and slow dance or just sit and rock and cry yourself back to 1950 and "may this bliss never end.." Suffice wholeheartedly recommend. Get it while you can and for that matter another one from NS catalogue on Origin Records, Hope is in the Air. Kudos to Don Sickler. Alejandro in Christchurch
