A new action fantasy series you should absolutely try!
This latest book by Mitchell Hogan set in his world of Wiraya was phenomenal! Firstly, you don't need to have read any other books in the series to keep up, but you will enjoy the odd caneo if you do. I don't want to spoil much, but our heroine used to be an assassin, but is trying for a peaceful retirement.Sadly, that doesn't happen, and she's forced to try and find out who is hunting her all of a sudden and why.I won't spoil any more, but if you like well crafted action novels with surprisingly deep characters, you'll love this one! I really couldn't put it down. Honestly, I'm super excited for the next book.

Action packed swords and sorcery
Demonic Designs is a new series set in the same world as previous series, with an Easter Egg or two when a familiar character pops up for cameo. Raven is a member of the Grim Hand, created through sorcery for dealing out death, a life from which she had previously escaped. All good things tend to come to an end, as her existence is threatened when assassins catch up to her, thus beginning a dangerous journey for answers. The story is told bouncing back and forth from her past to present. We get a picture of what she became and how, and the why she wanted out so desperately is answered. What I'm still craving is more info on the Grim Hand and what their missions were really about. Maybe they're in previous books, I'll have to look back. At any rate, I found these characters could have made a good side story, and maybe I'll learn more with continuing the series.Raven, is on the run having to resurrect herself along the way. Skills she hasn't used in a long time, exact a price on her body, as she bargains with dubious allies to solve this deadly puzzle.Finding old team members may hold the needed clues, or perhaps open new dangers. It's an action packed adventure, for fans of swords and sorcery.

Another great read!
About a woman that was kidnapped and forced to undergo transformative treatments involving demon blood to turn her into a powerful assassin able to use dark tide sorcery. After years of killing she gets out and lives a solitary life until a group of rival assassins shows up and she has to go on the hunt to discover who is after her and how they found out about her. All around great fantasy novel. Fast paced, lots of fighting, blood and magic, and a cast of well developed characters.

UNUSUAL TAKE
I was given a free copy of this book to read and decided to leave a review.Consider this book in the style of a "medieval Jason Bourne" with the Bourne character a female.Very well written and a good stand alone read although I understand the story connects with others by the same author.Good character development and, even if you have read nothing by the author, well worth a read.Would definitely read more from the same source.

Action-packed, with a kicka** female heroine
Raven: Reawakening is action-packed and fast-paced from start to finish with. There are tons of great, visualizable fight scenes. There is a high body count, but no excessive gore. I loved the protagonist: a kicka** female ex-assassin named Raven with intelligence, a conscience, and a willingness to kill to protect herself. The plot was compelling and had me on the edge of me seat the whole book. There were some great surprise twists that I didn’t see coming but definitely made total sense. No cliffhanger ending. The primary plot of this book was resolved, but there were definitely new plot lines introduced that are going to be continued in later books of this new series. I’m going to go crazy waiting for the next book in the series to come out.Raven is not only formidable, kind, and ruthless when necessary, but she also carries her pain and vulnerabilities with her in everything she does. And it doesn’t make her weak, it fuels her. When assassins come to kill Raven years after faking her own death to escape her old life as an assassin, she not only escapes, she sets out to find out who tried to have her killed and take the fight to them. To do so, she adopted her old assassin identity, Raven, once more. She survived her own government experimenting on her against her will with demon blood to make the perfect magical assassin. They changed or took almost everything: her body, appearance, name, and most of her memories. She escaped. She survived losing her baby daughter. She’s still standing. She’s still a fighter. She may be smart, competent, and have a conscience, but she’s also far from perfect. Sometimes, she is morally grey, gets fooled, and makes impulsive choices. She’s a fantastic strong female heroine! This book is written in a minimalist style: the concise bare bones of the story. Normally, I’m not a fan of this style because it tends get in the way of different characters having distinct voices, leave you confused or lacking crucial details, and leave you unable go visualize the content well. Thankfully, none of this was the case here! In this book, the writing is concise, precise, and well-crafted enough that the minimalist style avoids all those pitfalls, keeps the story moving along at a fast pace, and creates a relaxing reading experience. All the information you need for visualization, characterization, and clarity is simply packed into concise sentences.Warnings: mentions of loss of a baby, violence, descriptions of past non-consensual magical/medical experimentation on humans.Great book. I received a free e-copy via NetGalley. I am writing this review voluntarily and honestly.

Saskia is gone, Raven is here.
They trained her with torture and pain. They made her a killing machine. But then she discovered there were worse things than death. And love means different things to different people. I voluntarily reviewed this book after receiving a complimentary copy.
