Catch 22

I have got this exact version in my collection. It is an unusual book for it's time, due to the fact that it centre's on Yossarian, who will not enlist for war because he doesn't think it is any good, and a waste of life anyway! He is a bombardier who was also demoted, because he didn't care whether he missed or not. We see Yossarian doing everything he can to stop himself from being involved in the war at all. It is set in an island (which has been made bigger for this fictitious novel). As well as Yossairian,we meet Milo Mindbender, Major Danby(a psychiatrist) and Colonel Cathcart. Yossairin explains to Danby why he is avoiding moral combat, while Colonel Cathcart keeps on increasing the number of missions in order to keep in well with the survivors!Mindbender, who spends his time thinking up elaborate commercial enterprises, also bombs his own airfield in exchange for a promise from the Germans for a cost of the operation plus six per cent.This is a highly intelligent and funny novel, with grim reality and sadness thrown in. There is an argument between Cathcart, and another Colonel (Korn). Yossairian is in the middle (literally) of this,The question that I found myself at the end is "Why did the Americans glorify war?

I know it says "German" at the top, but it's not something you'd expect to look out for. Who'd expect to find a book in German on Amazon UK?
