This is a must have supplement to the CIPP foundation ...
This is a must have supplement to the CIPP foundation text book!! The CIPP text book - is really that - it's a text book - it has details and minutiae with references to research if you wanted to learn about a specific topic. This book by John Watts, however, is a study guide. It summarizes the four topical areas - tells you which ones to focus on. he has tips on the terms to learn on the glossary that is published by IAPP. There is a ton of practice test questions - with explanations on the answers - which teaches you the concepts. This is a must have in order to pass the CIPP foundation exam. I do have to warn you that there are some obvious typos (e.g. FRCA - should be FCRA) - but overlook those, because you know they are typos (does not cause any confusion on the concepts you need to learn) - this study guide is worth every penny!

Useful, but not as the sole resource
Passing the CIPP/US is fairly difficult and requires serious study. This book has some useful content, but no longer 100% covers the CIPP/US exam, likely due to revisions in the actual test vs. this book being updated. The test practice sections are useful, but again are fairly simple vs. the current test. Use this as part of the process, but you MUST use the Swire text from the IAPP as the main reference for this certification - and also make sure you cross reference the Body of Knowledge docs from the IAPP site.

The US portion of the book was very useful. Note
The US portion of the book was very useful. Note, this book isn't a self-contained study aid - it serves more as a tutor with directions on what to review, research, know. This is why I gave it four stars (I deducted a star because the book isn't entirely clear that the IAPP certification process has changed and much of the data on "foundations" isn't necessary). Each chapter addresses a different topic covered on the CIPP exam and where to look on the IAPP website for more information & definitions. The questions are spot on. The answers provided are helpful, albeit you may wish to use IAPP's guides to supplement. Note for lawyers: unlike real life where lawyers would commit malpractice if they relied on memory for key dates and/or code specifics - the IAPP exam requires you to memorize every detail. So memorize, memorize, memorize. The upside, I everything I memorized for the exam was useful in real life (unlike the bar exam). As an aside, I found taking the CIPP exam in a paper format (as opposed to on a computer) a lot easier. If you like paper too, opt to take the exam at a conference instead of at a testing center. Best of luck - and welcome to privacy - a great profession that keeps improving because it values collaboration over litigation. Go figure!

Passed the CIPP/US exam using this book as primary study guide
I passed the CIPP/US exam earlier this month using this book as the sole book that I utilized to prepare. While I do have experience in interpreting statutes, I have never worked as a privacy professional, so I was coming at the subject manner as an outsider. Nevertheless, this book proved to be a great resource. I never purchased or reviewed the CIPP US privacy textbook by Peter Swire or Kenesa Ahmad, which is one of the recommended go-to reference books to prepare for the test. However, it may make sense to also purchase and use that book in exam preparation as well. Note that in the fast-changing field of privacy, no book can stay current for long, and the same is true for this. For a number of areas covered on the test (state statutes, for example), individuals planning to take the test will want to familiarize themselves with recent developments. But the book did the trick for me. Highly recommended!

Don’t waste your time with this book
Don’t waste your time with this book. The content is absolute garbage, and the practice questions are terrible. The first set of practice questions focus on EU law and the second set of questions are far too simple and are nothing like the exam questions. I took the exam earlier this week. Also, the book came in beat up.

Most helpful CIPP/US study guide
I'm not a huge proponent of expensive study programs, especially since I'm not a very good in-class learner. I checked what the IAPP class offered, which was the book Foundations of Information Privacy and Data Protection A Survey of Global Concepts, Laws and Practices, some videos, and some updates.I started first with this study guide (about twice the length of the book offered by IAPP), went through the book mentioned above (first edition), went back through this study guide, Googled the "recent updates" on the IAPP study guide, then finished up with the official IAPP questions offered on their website. I passed with a score above 360 (minimum score of 300 to pass). Total study time of about one hour per day for one month with heavy study the last couple of days. The CIPP is definitely a flawed test with a *very* odd range of test subjects (ranging from brain dumb easy to shockingly specific even for things that are not controlling law and recent state law), but this was definitely the most helpful and least expensive of my study purchases. For background, I took a pretty general information security seminar in law school and have done *some* privacy work, but 95% of my knowledge definitely came from studying for this test.

Okay but not great
Outdated and not Canadian content.

Nice, however...
I recommend it purely for practicing the test-questions. At the exam some of them where asked. However, for the theory I would stick to the official guide, as it is much richer. You will not pass the foundation exam easily only using this book.
