The Trap [DVD]

A big let down.
To be brutally blunt… DON’T BUY THIS DISC! This is a great film and I can still remember it from when I first saw it many years ago. The two main actors, Read and Tushingham, are truly wonderful in their roles. This review isn’t about the film itself, but the DVD disc. It is fundamentally flawed. I have waited many many years for a chance to get a definitive copy of this film… and this ISN’T it! Strawberry Media, who market this disc, should be ashamed of themselves. I should have smelt a rat when they didn’t show the rear of the disc packaging in the Amazon advert. As soon as I saw the rear of the case I knew it was wrong. The disc is in 4:3 aspect (pan and scan) used on ‘60’s and ‘70’s CRT TV’s, NOT the correct 2.35 widescreen aspect. If I had known this prior to ordering, I wouldn't have bought it.For lovers of this film… and I am one… this was a HUGE disappointment. It looks as though the only way to view this film in it’s correct aspect is to watch a very low quality version on YouTube. Please… if you’re a film lover… save your money. Learn from my mistake.

Excellent film, poor DVD quality.
Excellent film, but the DVD quality is poor. Looks as if it was copied from a poor quality videotape, and has a letterbox appearance in the middle of the screen. Enlarging it to a reasonable size only further deteriorates the quality. Pity it's not available on BluRay.

WIDESCREEN FOR OLD BOX TV FORMAT
Great film but this version is very grainy on picture quality and is widescreen on a fixed 4:3 tv format. So does not extend out tho sided etc. But displays as a small letterbox picture.

Great Film - Pity About the Presentation
This film is brilliant and well worth five stars. It has a good, solid and original bonding story, great actors and acting, wonderful scenery and great music by Ron Goodwin. I remember seeing this at the cinema when I was a boy and have been wanting to get my hands on a dvd of it for years. But here is where the problems begin. This dvd has two versions: the first is in good colour and widescreeen, but in German and without subtitles; but the second is an extra, an English version shown on US TV and, not only is it fullscreen for TV which only shows the middle bit of what you see in the cinema, but the picture quality is very poor and the colour is so weak as to be not far off black and white, which means that you are going to miss out on the quality of the lovely colourful scenery and great photography of British Columbia's mountains and forests if you want to hear it in English. So the purchaser has but two choices: 1. See it in good quality widescreen and in colour, but hear it in German and without subtitles. 2. See just the middle bit of the screen in very poor quality and palid colour, but hear it in English.Hence, it only gets 3 stars. Please, can someone out there provide a decently presented dvd English version at an affordable price, because this is a great film worth seeing well so we can get the best out of it.

Quality is acceptable for such an old masterpiece, compared with a previous unwatcheable VHS bought.
Tested the video for working and quality but not yet watched it through--saving this much loved old film for the right time. Changed the audio to the original Russian plus English subtitles; the dubbed English it was set up with seemed completely alien.

The trap
When I was sixteen in 1966 a friend and I went to see this movie and loved it so much we went every night for a week. Oliver Reid sings "when I'm a man I'll take me a wife etc" we both fell in love with Oliver and wanted to be Rita Tushingham .... I have wanted to see this movie again for a long time and now I own it .... Always wondered why it wasn't repeated on television ....

Wonderful Film
I first saw this film when it came out in the 60s or was it the 70s? Have seen it many times since and it still remains one of my favorites. At last it's available on DVD though only the Spanish product. The menu was a little confusing and It took a while to get the English soundtrack, but I succeeded in the end.The menu is in Spanish so a bit confusing. A rather expensive purchase but worth it if you like me and like to watch your favorite films over and over again!

Great film not spoiled by the quality which was fine
The trap is a great film and not spoiled by the quality which was ok. It is an all time favourite so the negative comments about this film are wrong.
