In The Doghouse [DVD]

Another film cut down to 4X3.
I'd waited a long time for this film to be released on DVD but unfortunately it was released by the appalling Strawberry Media, one of the very worst DVD producers. As with most of their releases this film has been cut from its original aspect ratio of 1.66:1 to 1.33:1 to fit screens that were obsolete twenty years ago. Why do they do this? We now have to watch the middle part of the picture with large black areas each side when the picture should have almost filled the screen. In fact on the average wide screen TV over scanned by 10% 1.66:1 does fill the screen. If you want this film you'll have to buy it as it's not likely to be released by any other firm now but you will only get the middle of the picture. Why can't Strawberry Media do the same as Network and release all films in their original aspect ratio? This is a good comedy but I've only given it three stars because of the awful production done by Strawberry Media.

Very sweet comedy from 1962
Rather a gem, this forgotten Pinewood picture, replete with lovely location scenes..Unexpectedly touching, it manages really very well to turn a hapless goof into a competently effective and principled hero. All the acting is top-hole, Colin Gordon and the adorable Richard Goolden being especially hilarious. Catch the moment at the vicar's pet show when the parrot speaks and Kynaston Reeves disapproves..Could do with a better transfer (the ratio is wrong) but there is still much to relish.
