Jeep, Dana & Chrysler Differentials: How to Rebuild the 8-1/4, 8-3/4, Dana 44 & 60 & AMC 20 (Workbench How-to)

Not Recommended - way too general; Not organized very well
It's a very, very limited introductory book. It doesn't give specific instructions or complete specs for each axle, so it is mostly worthless. And much of the information is repeated over and over again. Except for the important information, like pinion setup, which always refers you to Page 49.I really couldn't recommend this book to anyone except for a total beginner who has never opened a differential cover.Covers weird topics, like leaf spring u-bolt torque, brakes and driveshafts, which don't really seem to be important in relation to gear setup. The entire book is organized strangely. There's not even an exploded view of a Dana 44 pinion, showing location of the bearings, oil slinger, etc. Basic, important information is missing. Don't waste your money on this book.

Whoever says this is not detailed enough, must be ...
Whoever says this is not detailed enough, must be a newb looking for a first time walk through because they have no clue what they are doing. This has all the specs and is extremely detailed. I have rebuilt quite a few axles now using the specs in this book.Axles are NOT something you should tackle yourself unless you have been doing complicated auto work for years, and know you have the proper tools before starting. The specialized tools alone are over $1k to rebuild axles properly. And that is a budget price on the low side. Just know what you're getting into. There is zero room for error in axles.

Not what I thought it was going to be.
I purchased this manual to rebuild my chrysler 8 3/4 differential. It's not laid out well enough or contain all the information required to rebuild the differential. If you are experienced with differentials it would probably be just fine. I was looking for a step by step guide on how to check out and rebuild your differential.

This is a begginers book. Best for someone who knows nothing about axles to start.
Very Poor explanation. I expected something more detailed per axle. Installation steps for one axle has you referring to another axle causing you to jump back and forth. Even if it was the same steps they should have been in the same chapter as the axle studied. The rebuilds had you using the most advanced tools that aren't sometimes needed. Could have shown real pictures of each axle with a acceptable pattern not a cartoon drawing of a general pattern. The factory service manual for my axle had better information and step by step procedures.

This book clears up all the swamp gas about differentials...
Thanks to Larry Shepard (author of this book), the mystery and darkness of differentials has become a well-lit and VERY interesting subject. There is NOTHING about differentials that should make anybody not want to attempt to work on one.I had alway thought that the weirdos that worked on differentials were in reality practicing witch doctors and should be avoided.Way to go Larry!!
