Product Description (Holland) .co.uk If you have any pop, soul or jazz CDs, the ubiquitous bassist and multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller is probably on some of them. From Luther Vandross and David Sanborn to Miles Davis, Miller has been making cutting-edge music with the greatest stars of the past three decades. On M2, which includes a stellar array of musicians from Wayne Shorter to Maceo Parker, Miller unveils the full range of his eclectic musicality. On the funky, uptempo "Power", Talking Heads' "Burning Down the House" (featuring alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett), and "Nikki's Groove", Miller displays his powerful thumb-driven Larry Graham-derived licks. On Charles Mingus's moody tribute to Lester Young, "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", Herbie Hancock tickles the ivories in his trademark impressionistic style, which complements Miller's Jaco-Pastorius-like bass lines. Miller's arranging genius transforms John Coltrane's ballad "Lonnie's Lament" into a head-bopping hip-hop groove Dr. Dre would like, thanks to his soul-searing bass clarinet and Branford Marsalis's and Hubert Laws's soprano sax and flute lines. Raphael Saadiq, the Brazilian superstar Djavan and the legendary Chaka Khan lend their distinctive vocals to the quiet-storm vehicles "Boomerang" and "It's Me Again" and the spiritual "Your Amazing Grace". With a firm grasp of the jazz tradition and a broad knowledge of popular musical idioms, Marcus Miller is in the centre of everything, laying down the groove. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Neither pop nor jazz
Buy Renaissance. It's a superior version of this, which is way too cheesy.

More Hot Fun
A positive pot pourri of stylish Jazz Funk and R& B from the multi-instrumental Mr. Miller. All his trade marks are here, the thumping, swinging Bass and the unique delight that is Marcus Miller on the Bass Clarinet. Charles Mingus' Goodbye Pork Pie Hat is given a reverential treatment and the place really catches fire on Burning Down The House (The Talking Heads favourite). Billy Cobham's Red Baron is an interesting cover version. The standout track though is the reworking of the old hymn Amazing Grace into a new song called Your Amazing Grace. This track has an amazing blend of funk and gospel and a sublime vocal from Chaka Khan.Previous albums from Marcus Miller have had an almost ghostly presence of Marcus' late collaborator Miles Davis. With M2 he seems to be getting away further away from the giant shadow cast by Miles.Recommended.

Marcus miller need I say more
Ive been listening to Marcus's music since 1981 he immediately became my favorite bass player. From his work with David Sanborn, Miles Davis & Dave Grusin to name only three of many he's worked with. You can here his influences from Larry Graham, Jacko Pastorious to Stanley Clarke. My favorite track features Rapheal Siddiq, Boomerang from the film of the same name. Over the years he just keeps getting better, you'll not be dissapointed with this album

great album, a real grower
this album is excellent, mixing funk styles with jazz standards (goodbye pork pie hat). the highlight for me has got to be marcus' version of lonnie's lament, or the catchy melody that is nikki's groove. the only turn off on the album is that the drum programming throughout is quite sterile. maybe i've just been listening to too much dj hi tek, but this really seems to detract from the album. another thing is that, in my opinion, some of the synth sounds he uses sound really eighties. but it is a great album, and it's a testament to his great playing that this album is still so good even with the problems it has.

He is a Legend and this album is a Classic
A superb and classic album that once again establishes Marcus Miller as one of the greatest bass players around today. 'Lonnie's Lament' is an absolute classic and a real stand out track on the album, worth buying just for that and of course 'Power'. I really wish he would record with full live drums though :o( But he is an inspiration to bass players and i love his style. This album is must have for all bass players!

Excellent CD!
This is great, mood lifting music. From very funky to a slow ballad. The bass playing is on a par with Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke. The inclusion of the Billy Cobham classic Red Baron alone makes it worthwhile. One word of caution: if you want to play this loud (and it sounds fantastic if you do!) make sure your amp and speakers are up to it. This recording eats Watts for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
