The Permanent Way: A Play Paperback – January 25, 2007

A brilliant piece of docu drama. Tremendously well written. Hare knows how to conduct, if you will forgive the pun! He takes the facts, the real people, choosing wisely when to lean back and let them tell their story and when to arrange that story so that it is riviting, gives the full impact and takes us deeper than we expect into the real questions, of why this kind of thing happens, and who is responsible.Where are the American equivelants of this kind of drama, we sorely need them?

The book is a very well observed, chastening précis of what went wrong with our railways, and the British disease of those in authority being unable to rise to, and sort out, any problem because of the lack of ability to grab it by the throat. A very good observation of the human condition, and those that spout promises that are not fulfilled because there is no will to do so. False promises for any media opportunities, but after all tomorrow is another day and another different personal PR opportunity. A book that makes you think; those that caused some of the accidents were not prosecuted, in fact they won lucrative contracts to sort out what they had supposed to have done prior to the accident! Highly recommended, and if you have any interest in how Britain or the railways are run, you should be saddened and annoyed by what you read.
