Great, powerful, portable panel
I ordered one of these SunTactics sCharger-5 panels having seen it on the US Amazon site. It had great reviews, in particular for the amount of power that it produces and the great customer service that Dean at SunTactics provides. To be honest, it has been great. The panels definitely output much more than my other solar chargers (Joos Orange included) and I can get some sort of charge indoors through a window in springtime London. As with all other solar panels, the output is massively improved when used outdoors (up to 5W I believe, hence the name). It's also a good move that the sCharger-5 uses a standard USB out to charge - this makes it very versatile with all my usual cables. The build quality seems pretty good and the mono-crystalline panels are each about the same size as that on my Joos Orange. The sCharger-5 is slim and folds up nicely. The build seems fairly good, though I am a little worried about the hinge which is essentially just a double layer plastic film which folds with the panel connectors in it - it reminds me of a ribbon cable for connecting components in a PC. I don't think it will wear out from use but I don't know how durable it will be to the elements and when the panel is resting at an angle on it on an uneven surface. A bonus for me is that the sCharger-5 is made in the USA and, though I'm not sure there is much difference in the build quality you might have seen had it been manufactured in China, I personally appreciate having an item made in one of the Western markets and supporting business directly over there.Outdoors in the timid British spring sunshine I've managed to charge an iPhone, a Sony Ericsson Android phone, a Huawei E586 wireless 3G modem from the panels using their respective USB cables. Of course, indoors it struggled to consistently charge any of the phones - though it did charge the E586! Some might see it as a downside that the sCharger-5 has no built in battery. Yes, it would be nice but it would add significantly to the bulk of the panels and you also are then stuck with the problems of changing it when the battery fails. Instead, I have bought one of the many cheap USB rechargeable power packs from Amazon and charge that from the sCharger when I'm not directly charging something else.I'm very pleased with the sCharger-5 and would highly recommend it. It is more powerful and versatile than my Joos Orange, though maybe not quite as rugged (though the Joos Orange has given me endless problems with its proprietary pseudo-micro USB connector) and not an 'all in one' panel + battery solution. On top of that, the service which SunTactics provided me when there was a problem with delivery was second to none.It could be improved I think if the hinge was a little more rugged and there were some accessories available (like a bracket for mounting it on a stand or tripod?).Overall, though, this is a 5-star solar charger that I am very happy with. It's proved to have a decent power output and has been pretty reliable in the month or so that I've owned it.
