I would NOT suggest using it for joining two rugs. I would look at a nylon thread at least 40 wt. If you could find a 30 wt ir 12 wt nylon would be best for your project.

Q: Does this thread work well for heart removal or is it too thick?

Not quite sure what "heart removal is", I use this for applique both top and "reverse" applique. If I want the thread to not stand out I use 100 silk
