The Unlikely Heir: A Forbidden MM Royal Romance (Unlikely Dilemmas)

Believable romance that kept me guessing until the end
The premise seemed outlandish but Ms. Calder made it work. I absolutely believed the two MCs fell in love over time. The pacing was just right; the relationship was filled with humor, bad jokes/puns and shared confidences. The angst was relatively low, centered predominantly around the challenge of figuring out how the two MCs could possibly have a HEA given their legally conflicting roles in the UK. I was kept guessing until the end about whether one of them would have to give up their profession (and if so, who would do so) or whether some new law/rule might be passed to allow them to be together. The grand gesture moments were satisfying, and the HEA ending didn’t feel rushed. Thank you, Ms. Calder, for another wonderful romance with non-cookie cutter characters and a unique plot.Edited to add: Given the current popularity of Red, White and Royal Blue due to the release of the show, I thought I’d add that I read RWARB a year or so ago. I enjoyed it and thought it was lighthearted and fun. A key difference between the two novels (aside from the overall plot) is that the stakes of the romance wasn’t that high in RWARB—the royal wasn’t the first in line to the throne, and no real, legal conflict exists to forbid the relationship. (The conflict in that book, using the US elections and possible negative public opinions as the backdrop, was more manufactured.) In The Unlikely Heir, however, the stakes are real and significant. The two MCs truly cannot remain the Prince of Wales and the Prime Minister if they want to stay together because British law says they can’t. I enjoyed The Unlikely Heir more—it gave me more warm feelings, more chuckles, more satisfying romantic feels.

Good read
This story about the ordinary, yet bumbling, American guy who's way down the British royal totem pole - he's 11th in line to the throne - is suddenly moved up to be next in line after the monarch. And there's the country's prime minister, too. From the moment the two shake hands, there's that zap of electricity across fingers and, goodness-wow, they're sold on each other.Good plotline, written well. There is a baddie and if I hadn't accidentally spotted the baddie's name in an Amazon review of this book I would have been 100% happier. All the characters are well-drawn as individuals and not carbon copies of each other. There was a fraction of repeat-writing.

my heart is so full!
It’s hard to say just how much I loved this book! It’s fair to say that it takes some serious suspension of belief sometimes. But my goodness!! These two are so incredibly sweet together and I just feel for them instantly. Callum is adorable and fun and dorky. Just the kind of guy who would make a most relatable royal. Oliver is stiff and serious with a softness that makes me melt. I found myself giggling, happy squealing, and kicking my feet with joy on so many occasions. Just absolutely adorably lovely!

Not what I expected at all, and that’s a really great thing.
I did not see this coming. But you might want to manage your expectations and call this contemporary fantasy romance, because it seems a lot of folx reviewing took issue with the things I loved the most, which you could tell were definitely on purpose and mirrored the author’s BTS about how they came up with the idea for this book. That was a long sentence. Moving on…This book is pure fiction, giving major faerytale/fantasy vibes. It is super romantic, cheesy, OTT, and shouldn’t have been classed as low angst. It was definitely medium as the bare minimum definition. Any lower, and it would’ve been too much cheese. Also, and shorter or less than it was, and it would’ve been awkward and a complete cringe-fest. It needed the WHOLE story. However, think of this as a grownup version of a Disney love story, but make it m/m romance. It was everything I needed after spending the majority of the last month reading books that were heavy on my soul. It was the best kind of love story, and I will mention again the extreme level of romance, lest you forget all of the swoon. The friggin’ quotes in this book could fuel a fire for years. The mechanics were good, the language was spot on for the characters and their backgrounds, the story was intricate and kept you interested, and as long as you love cheese and mushy love stuff, you can’t go wrong. No matter what this author writes, they deliver exactly what they imagined and more.5/5.

First book by Jax Calder
This book was a break from a series I'm hooked on which is the opposite of sweet. This book was a beautiful interlude. Loved the humor, the writing, the sweet love story. Truly heartwarming. I'm glad I stumbled on this one

Ignore the setup, enjoy the romance!
What a great romance! I read Red, White and Royal Blue just before this book, since the general plots are the same. While Red, White and Royal Blue was hilarious, I found The Unlikely Heir to be very witty and had a better development of the romance. I appreciated the detailed background given to Oliver, and the wonderful randomness of Callum. The reason I took off a star was because: (1.) The likelihood of the total collapse of the mostly all the royal family to be incredible (2.) The likelihood of a very young (39), driven, successful, and openly gay Prime Minister to be extremely remote. However, if you can ignore those reasons, you will find a lovely story of two people who slowly fall in love with each other in the most delightful way. Kudos to the author for a very well-written story!I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Lovely royal fairytale - fresh and sweet
i liked how the fantasy was done in such a way that you could suspend belief and enjoy. What is special about Jax's books:The falling in love / fall into like first is so very well done. There is lusting and hotness, but there is also - on the page - genuine sweet discovery of liking, talking, feelings - you get that there is love growing, and you truly believe the connection you can see on the page. This is so special, the tender closeness the H/H develop for each other. Also, the pining and the taking-your-time to solve a seemingly impossible situation is done just right. You do not wait too too long, but you also do not have solutions within a couple of days.In all, a perfect little fairytale of an impossible love, tender and sweet.
