Cook Express

I really like this book. It's full of good ideas and arranged in a slightly different way to a lot of other cookery books. I particularly like the 'batch and freeze' section which had large scale recipes for 8- 10 people that could be frozen in smaller portions. This section also covered sauces that could be made in large amounts and frozen in portions so you don't have to start from scratch if you want a pasta sauce or similar. As the 'Express' in the title suggests it's designed for quick, easy to prepare food and uses lots of short cut ingredients - ready made pie cases, pastry etc.While it has a fair amount of everyday recipes it's geared towards informal entertaining and has a great section on 'no cook' starters, canapes and desserts. The canape section in particular has lots of good ideas so simple and obvious you'd wonder why you never thought of them before. None of the recipes require advanced cookery skills or exotic, hard-to-acquire ingredients and it's a book I know I'll cook from rather than just admiring the photographs.The index isn't comprehensive and is a bit hit and miss but it's easy enough to find what you're looking for just by browsing the different sections. The one drawback to this book is that it is enormous, a big heavy breeze block. You really need to be sitting at a table to browse through it and if you try to read it in bed, as I did, you're flirting with a crush injury. However it's high quality and glossy and the good paper should withstand the food splodges that any cookery book should acquire. I love it.

There are plenty of useful tips and suggestions as well as easy to follow recipes. I have to admit that as yet, I have not made anything from the book, but there are plenty of ideas that I would like to try, so it won't be very long before I find out whether the recipes are as good as they look!

Brilliant and as described

A must have on your cooking books bookshelf. Some brilliant recipes clearly explained. Great section on stocks and sauces.
