Fun alternative advent calendar
Note that there is a $9 coupon currently in effect, which brings the price down to $20.I have a 9 year old that loves crystals and minerals. He likes to look at, sort, and organize the crystals and minerals in his collection. This will be a perfect alternative to the traditional candy-based advent calendar. The set comes with 24 "rocks" - pastel colored chalk blocks with a crystal or mineral embedded inside. The set includes an inexpensive set of "digging" tools: a small mallet, a small brush, and a small pick. The set also includes a set of educational cards for each crystal or mineral. The "calendar" itself isn't much to write home about. It's made of a very thin cardboard with perforated cutouts for the days. Interestingly, the days of the month are randomly organized on the box, so you have to hunt each day down. This should be a fun advent calendar to use this Christmas with my 9 year old. I'll have to update the review after Christmas with what the crystals are like.

I just wanted the gemstones ;)
I will digress that I did grab this for myself because I wanted the stones. However, I loved grabbing the variety of stones for meditation purposes all in one shot, and while would be awesome as an advent calendar, I'm not opposed to saying that someone who wants to decorate/meditate using stones could benefit from the set as well. I docked a star because almost every stone has a crack or chip, which I assume could have come from transit. They are natural so a few cracks are to be expected, but it was enough to surprise me. However, they're mostly easy to hide, and it's pretty much only a sensory issue (and potentially an isolated fluke of my set). Again -- even with cracks/chips, totally worth it, especially for a beginner gemstone collector.

These are really nice!
These are really nice! It was odd to get these now and then do a review of them, but oh well. Christmas in July!! First thing is that the box is somewhat flimsy which I'm sure led to the damage it incurred during shipping. The doors look easy enough to open, though we didn't do so. The plastic container is enough to keep the rocks separated, but not enough to withstand shipping challenges. The rocks themselves are much better than I expected. To be honest, I didn't think they would be this nice, this size or as polished as they are! This is what really makes this a gem. It would have been great to have the doors printed with what stone they were, but I have no idea if these are filled randomly or the same way each time. That being said, they did include a card sheet to show what was what, but that is tucked away inside, so you need to retrieve that before opening anything. Then if you do that, you take the surprise away of what's inside. No real good answer except print on the door what is what. In my opinion at least. Overall, I would say this is really nice, but could use a few improvements.

Marvelous idea and stones, Mediocre cheap execution
The media could not be loaded. I am incredibly impressed with the size and quality of some of these crystal stones. No duplicates, but two or three don’t quite match up to their picture. For example, the Tigers Eye is either very low grade or a completely different stone, and the Sodalite has hardly any blue on it so is hard to identify. This, for an Advent Calendar, is a wonderfully unique idea. However, I feel for that purpose it needs to be more solid. The box I got was pretty beat up and the stones sit in a flimsy tray, like what cookies/crackers come in(?). Seems like they may fall out and about with too much movement. I’d recommend opening the calendar horizontally so one doesn’t fall out onto a hard surface. It’s not easy to pop open the little doors either, without tearing something. Also, it bothers me the numbers aren’t in order. Seems to take away from the anticipation of counting down -that’s just me though, I know many others are similarly designed. It is nice you can pull them out without having to punch any doors though and the identification card is basically necessary.I like that the box’s design isn’t overly religious either. Well, it’s not religious at all really. Just a starry nightscape with the train of reindeer in the sky. Some of these crystals are amazing, especially considering the low price. For instance, the rose quartz is polished into a large egg and the Citrine is a sizable sphere. A few have some cracks and aren’t the greatest of specimens, but overall are above average.People of all ages will get a thrill out of this collection. I’d suggest being very careful with that box though. If you’re mailing or sending it, consider writing a note, or even making/buying a different box altogether. And careful not to let the stone fall out after opening the door. Probably better to do the calendar horizontally.A superior value for an extremely nice collection of crystal stones. I absolutely would gift this (noting the whole box caveat) and order another for myself.

The gemstones are nice. The box is quite dull - especially for children
I ordered this advent calendar for my 8-year old nephew who loves all kinds of nature and science things. The stones themselves are nice - they are well polished and smooth and are a good size for kids. The calendar box is not very nice. It is quite flimsy and the design on it is not very bright or appealing for kids. I am going to add some bright Christmas stickers to it to make it more interesting for him. It does come with an identification card that is nice so he will be able to learn the names of each of the gemstones. The set did not come with the crystal "holder" type item shown at the very top of the first picture in the listing. It only comes with the gemstones. I like the idea behind this advent calendar and the gemstones and ID card that are included are nice.
