Classic Italian sword and sandal movie. I was really impressed with the cyclops effect for the age of the film. The bluray pic quality is also amazing. This will likely never come to 4K so this is gonna be as good as it gets.

I have always lived this movie and finally there is a good quality available. Can’t understand how a person gives one star because of Italian language and subtitles. It’s an Italian production and all. Except two of the actors are Italian. Read the subtitles..

THIS IS SINGULARLY THE "WORST" COPY OF A MOVIE THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN!1) It is subtitled Italian language version. So None of the Main Characters such as Kirk Douglas or Anthony Quinn can be heard. Their voices are dubbed over in Italian!2) The BAD quality of the video is less than anything I have ever attempted to watch. Screen is either Too dark or Too bright providing little to no ability for the viewer to determine the scenes or recognize the characters.3) I was unable to strain my eyes or even want to continue with this Insult to a classic movie plagiarized by an Inferior Unprofessional group of movie peddlers AND an Insult to an audience that appreciates movies of this genre.I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE MY FEE REIMBURSED. BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN. THE AI ON THIS SITE JUST KEEPS WANTING ME TO BUY OTHER INFERIOR PRODUCTS!! Saw this near epic when it was first released back in the 50s. Yes, I'm that old but the film is better than I remembered, full of vivid set pieces like the capture of Ulysses and his crew by the cyclops and the encounter with sorceress Circe. The film was an Italian, French and American co-production, featuring a mostly Italian cast, as well as American actors Kirk Douglas, as the title character and Anthony Quinn as Atinoos, one of the suitors vying for the hand of Ulysses long-suffering wife, Penelope. Douglas and Quinn are just fine in their respective roles, portraying their characters in a naturalistic manner but most of the Italians in the cast, literally act as if they were given different direction, chewing ample scenery, shouting their lines while thrusting out their chests. It's an odd mix of acting styles and one aspect of the film that gives it an unintended comedic touch. Otherwise, it's a worthy example of premium <i>peplum<i> finally available on Blu-ray. Like me, you might enjoy recapturing some old-fashioned entertainment they once called "rousing".

The service was quick and packaging was good. The disk preserves a dramatic role of a great actor who is no longer living. It is exquisite.

Another sword & sandal epic from Italy, this 1954 production had a solid foundation-Homer’s epic tale. The production itself featured Kirk Douglas as Ulysses (Second billed overseas) and Anthony Quinn in what amounts to a supporting role as the rival of Ulysses. The remaining cast are made up of Italian veterans. This has the hallmarks of many of Dino DeLaurentiis international co-productions of the time; epic scope and a multi-national cast (full disclosure- I worked for Dino, well not directly, actually for Dino’s son-on-law Producer Alex de Benedetti in the 80’s). Like many of Dino’s productions, he pre-sold off distribution to various companies to come up with the budget.Dino’s wife at the time Silvano Mangano got top billing in Europe. She plays two roles here-Ulysses wife and Circe and does a great job. The better version of the film is the Italian dub (although be aware that Douglas & Quinn are dubbed by Italian actors). As with many Italian films of the time, the film was shot silent and the dialog all dubbed post-production. Be aware the subtitles vary quite a bit between the two versions.The film is uneven which isn’t a surprise given that there are seven credited writers including Irwin Shaw & Ben Hecht. The dialog is unusual clunky given the writers involved. Mario Cameeini’s direction is workman-like lacking the inspired staging one would hope with an epic film like this. Still, Douglas’ boisterous performance lifts all performances here. Be aware, if you notice lip flap, that’s due to the post-production overdubs. There’s nothing wrong with your Blu-Ray player.Kino states this is a 4K restoration. I’m not sure what the source is but it can’t possibly be the original camera negative. This is a marked improvement over the muddy, murky DVD but it still isn’t as detailed or clear as K had hoped. The colors are robust.Dialog is clear but the sound is, not surprisingly, tinny. I’m not sure of the source but it could have used a bit more work to beef it up.The special features include a great and informative commentary by Tim Lucas. We get a collection of trailers in addition to both versions of the film.

La película es un peplum italiano de bajo presupuesto que si bien no se acerca al tamaño de grandes producciones como por poner un ejemplo a Espartaco, si encontramos a un Kirk Douglas soberbio y en plenitud, totalmente espectacular en esta Adaptación de la Odisea de Homero. El episodio con Polifemo, aunque ya le pesan mucho los años, sigue siendo muy memorable.Quede gratamente sorprendido con la imagen, imaginaba iba a estar imposible de ver, llena de granos y brincos de imagen, pero en general esta bastante limpia y se disfruta sin problema. El sonido para reconocerse.Si tú al igual que yo llegaste aqui por una casualidad, no dudes en comprarla, es muy difícil conseguirla y será una buena adquisición a tu colección tanto si eres como no fan de Kirk Douglas o del cine clásico Épico y Fantástico. Por el lado de los extras, no hay mucho, prácticamente nada por parte de Liongate.Viene con audio en Inglés y Subtitulos en Español.

Die Ilias beschreibt den 10- jährigen Kampf der Griechen mit ihrem Anführer, dem König Agamemnon, gegen die ebenfalls griechische Festung Troja, die sich auf der türkischen Seite des Mittelländischen Meeres befand. Der Grund für diesen Krieg war die Entführung der Schönen Helena, der Gemahlin des alten Königs Agamemnon, durch den jungen und schönen Paris, der mit der freiwillig entführten Helena in die griechische Festung Troja flüchtete. Troja war zu jener Zeit eine der reichsten Städte in der antiken Welt von damals.König Agamemnon versprach den griechischen Königen neben der Zurückeroberung seiner schönen Gemahlin Helena, auch das viele Gold Trojas. Nachdem Odysseus die Tore Trojas den Griechen öffneten und die Griechen die Trojaner in der Nacht niedermetzelten, traf Odysseus der Fluch der Priesterin Cassandra, die ihm laut zurief: „Fluch über dich, dreimal Fluch über dich. Du sollst von nun an umherirren, keinen Krill finden und auch kein Ziel.“Der Film zeigt uns die Odyssee, die Irrfahrten und Erlebnisse des Odysseus auf seiner Heimfahrt bis zu seiner Ankunft in seiner Heimat, der Insel Ithaka, deren König er war. Hier wartete auf ihn seit mehr als 10 Jahren die schöne und treue Penelope, seine junge Gemahlin, umworben von zahlreichen Bewerbern, die durch die Heirat mit Penelope, König von Ithaka werden wollten. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Ithaka, tötete Odysseus alle unverschämten Nebenbuhler seiner Gemahlin. „Penelope, es führte kein Weg daran vorbei.“ „Ja, Odysseus“ „Penelope, wir haben das Leben noch vor uns, lass es uns jetzt gemeinsam genießen.“ Im Hintergrund sieht man den fertig gewebten Teppich der Penelope. So endet die Geschichte von Odysseus, dem Homer die Unsterblichkeit verlieh, durch seine wunderbaren Erzählungen von der Ilias und der Odyssee.Die schauspielerische Qualität, die künstlerische Schärfe und die wunderschönen Farben dieses Filmes begeistern gleichzeitig Jung und Alt. Ich habe mir den Film auf einer Blue Ray Disk gekauft.Das ist etwas von bleibendem Wert, der niemals vergehen wird.

Une belle édition avec le BD du film, version italienne, anglaise et allemande mais pas de version française présentésdans un horrible boitier double que je me sui empressé de le remplacer par un boitier OR autrement plus esthétique !L'ensemble se trouve inséré dans un étui carton, la jaquette ne comporte pas le logo FSK en la retournant, ce qui estappréciable ! Bref, un produit recommandable malgré quelques les défauts signalés ci-dessus !

This version of The Odyssey with and entertainingly robust Kirk Douglas and the Italian bombshell Silvana Mangano is easily definitive because it's the only version which isn't flat. This might have a lot to do with the fact that Hollywood veteran Ben Hecht did the final version of the screenplay.
