one of the best "low-budget" movies i've ever seen
loosely based on a true story, this movie shows part of what muslims faced the period after 911. the main part of the movie was how one could lose their faith due to the trauma that they've faced. I feel like some moments in the movie were cliché but it was still a great movie (and I don't say that often)

some strong points diluted by unexplained silence of main character
Has some good seeds, some good ideas. Talks about what it might be like to grow up in a family of this sort. With so much emphasis on the family religion. And with an overbearing father to whom this religion is his entire identity (note they never told us anything else about him). So it was educational, and we can see parallels in people growing up in any other fundamentalist group. But the script had some problems too. Tariq was far too hostile - to EVERYONE. And he was so reluctant to say anything. Why could he not tell anyone about the physical abuse? Why would he not explain his position to his roommate, his friend cedric, or the girl that showed interest in him? Made the entire film a little too frustrating.

very distorted view of Islam
whereas lots of muslim parenting could be strict, that is not the teachings of Islam. there should be no compulsion in religion - the Quran says. However, I believe it is people who distort the teachings of every religion and not the teachings themselves.they could barely say the greetings of the religion, most of the pronunciations were really wrong.next time make it better

Highly recommend!
The more we can learn from other cultures, religions, and experiences, the closer we can all gain a true appreciation and respect for each other.

An Important Film to See
Not great cinematography, but story is more than relevant today. Although much of the narrative takes place before 9/11, and its representation of conservative Islam is greatly distorted, it does a decent job of representing the tensions of being Muslim in America. Its representation of irrational bigotry is compelling, although at times over-the-top. Regardless, an important film to see. The sound is unevenly mixed, which makes it difficult to hear the dialogue over the music too many times during the film. Viewing this film on a computer with headphones makes the dialogue more intelligible. Unfortunately, this version of the film does not have subtitles or captions. I found this film online, however, with Arab subtitles. Too bad the producers of this important film could not provide captions for the hearing impaired, or subtitles in any language to increase the population of people who could understand this film.

Good to fair
A movie which I had waited a long time to see, unfortunately the story line was not as strong as I expected it to be.Most suitable for teenagers and above, contains mild violence - a little.
