Stones are the only way to go
I swear by a sharpening stone. I taught meat cutting throughout the Southeast many years ago and have used many a stone. This is a good stone at a good price. If you have never used one, take your time, and until you are comfortable using it in the manner you come to prefer, go by the instructions. They aren’t bad, except for number 2. I am not sure if it is saying to grind the stone or grind the workbench, but either one is wrong. You grind the knife. It is also a little vague.Place the knife so that the flat of the stone matches up to the angle of the edge of the knife. Then add pressure Goldilocks style, neither too much nor too little as you slowly move the blade along the flat of the stone. Make sure your knife remains in the proper angle in respect to the stone. This is all pretty basic, but you never know.Anyway, this stone gets 5 stars as it functions well in the intended capacity.

Good whetstone
This is a pretty straight forward whetstone. Most people purchasing this either know how to use one or are gifting it to someone that knows how to use it. I grew up watching my dad sharpen all our knives with a whetstone. He used the same one for his entire life and then when he passed, it went to my brother. If used properly they they last forever. This whetstone is on the larger side and heavy. It sharpened the one knife I tried very well.

Excellent Whetstone, Great Value
I have quite a few good quality kitchen knives which regularly require sharpening. I have never had good success with the sharpening rod. Instead I got a ceramic V-groove sharpener which works ok, but does not get the edge razor sharp. Some of the knives have a bevel edge on one side so these cannot be sharpened with a V-groove sharpener. The whetsone is a lot better for sharpening quality blades but it takes some practice to get the perfect edge. This whetstone is great quality. The stone is perfectly smooth and the 2 sides allow you to start with a coarser grid for a very dull edge and finish up with the finer grit. This whetstone is great value.

Excellent value stone!
My father was a custom woodworker—an artist. He fashioned everything from fine furniture to guitars, two of which were played on occasion by the legendary Merle Travis. All of this, from the intricate joinery to delicate inlays, was accomplished with consummate craftsmanship skills and simple handtools. I grew up watching him hone and sharpen various blades and edges. Knives and chisels were literally razor sharp—sharp enough to shave with. I know how to sharpen things and the tools it takes to best get there. Whetstones are a must if you want to keep your knives seriously sharp…and good stones are seldom cheap. This is an exception to that rule. Not only is it inexpensive as these things go, but it's of excellent quality from white corundum. I've paid twice as much—and more!—for stones of similar quality. I got the 400/1000 grit because I'll mostly be using it to touch up and maintain my kitchen, fillet, belt, and pocket knives. You might opt for a higher or lower grit combo. Regardless, on a cost-to-value basis, this is a great whetstone choice.

Really nice quality
Great consistent grade, good water soaking ability and rubber surrounds to keep the stone in place when sharpening. The box it ships in is fairly heavy and can be used for storage of the stone. It has a window that shows the stone's grit values so if yo have a range of different stones you will be able to grab the one you want just by looking at the side of the box. Good bargain for these.
