Precise progressive Rock
Good Progressive rock well sung. Guitar based and short songs rather than the longer ones they have previously been known for with greater progressive content

A triumphant change in direction
The odds were stacked against me liking this album. The EP "Between Two Steps", from which two tracks ended up on Hyperdrive, implied a much more AOR approach to Knight Area's sound. The pre-launch publicity blurb indeed alluded to this. The tracks are shorter with only one track longer than six minutes. As an avid fan of Knight Area's symphonic neo progressive music I was worried!Hyperdrive is a triumph and an example of a band re-inventing itself. There is enough of the Knight Area neo progressive sound left to not feel one is listening to another group. However, the song writing has shifted from predominantly keyboard focused to guitar driven, Mark Bogert is one hell of a guitarist. Both technical and melodic. Mark Smit's vocals have been getting better each album and are at their best here surprisingly well suited to the heavier material. Yes, quite a few of the songs could be classed as AOR but they are of the highest quality. This is quite a heavy album. Tracks like "Afraid of the dark" and "Avenue of broken dreams" remind me very much of Dream Theater's Awake period. "Stepping out" is an awesome guitar dominated instrumental with a very melodic gentle guitar solo followed by a heavy one. Hypnotised, the longest track on the album, is a "classic" sounding Knight Area track that would have sat comfortably on any of their four previous studio albums, and may well have been a highlight. A highly enjoyable and unexpected album that should appeal to progressive rock fans, AOR fans, and metal fans.

AWESOME, FANTASTIC, UNBELIEVABLE, FRESH, NEW, MARVELOUS, this is a truly new experience formed on a metal music
Awesome , Awesome, Awesome, and more of that later of the disc...HYPERDRIVE, is a wild ride, full of top notch guitar and keyboards. It fits into the model of the new power rock, PROG-METAL. Well worth twice the money you will end up paying for the disc, well most of the time anyway. This CD has a great storyline wonderful layout as to how to play out that story Musically in order to gain the majority of Listeners in the most economical use of notes ( not bank notes ) ....He turned with a slightly indignant smirk playing on his lips. Teaching these classes today is so much easier than it was years ago. Then there was constant questioning of the authority. The Teacher was nothing more then but a babysitter, now you got to actually do something beside look at those children day in and day out and that tends to be something is. When I was in England I saw Teacher taking his class on a field trip to locate and then generate a description of each of the Dino's they discovered.. This was a fantastic was to educate the kids without simply staying in a classroom. Being in Northern Alberta this is difficult because of Budget restraints but work on this later could you Please ....we are not all brothers and sister's under the skin That might become a little crowded and decision making as to where we are going might led t eem

On Steroids!
The songs are much heavier than before. I would characterize this album as progressive metal. Guitar very up front, almost "showing off" at times, but some really nice melodic soloes ala ARENA as well. They really do rock their asses off on this record.... I bet they love playing these songs live LOL! If you like melodic hard rock music then this is for you.Nothing stays the same, kudos to the band for embracing the new direction and delivering a strong effort. I bet the next one will be even better.
