A friend recommended this book to me, since she had purchased the Magic Lantern Guide for her specific camera and loved it.I wish this book had come with my camera because I had no idea about some of the settings and tricks for better photos. The generic manual that came with my camera is obviously printed for many other Nikon camera, too.I'm still reading and learning from this book, but just what I've discovered in the first week made it worth the price. The photos are also a great help, as opposed to the black and white diagrams in the factory manual.

Well written, plenty of detail, but NOT for a DSLR neophyte. He or she would be scared off digital photography for life. HOWEVER, if you have plenty of experience, the sections on specialized settings are very good.

Was perfect for simple and understandable instructions on how to use the camera without being overly technical. Exactly what I needed as a novice using a Nikon for the first time.

I have the magic lantern guide for the D3100 and the D70s, they are remarkably similar. The guide is updated for menus and camera controls but you can lift much of the advice about settings out of the guides for older models.

This is a well written book. I like to have a hard copy manual so I can flip from one topic to another and carry with me. You can't do that with an on-line manual.

Carry this with me any time we take the camera. Nice quick reference guide, I can use all the help I can get !

Lots of great little tricks to improve your Photography Skills.

I have hummed and harred about whether to give three or four stars to this, settling eventually on four as three would suggest average, and the book will certainly remain useful for a long time. It is also very detailed.What it is very good at is describing the function of every single setting and button of this particular model (including that of accessories such as flash, which you may not even have yet). So as a go-to manual it will be always be very useful. However this style is not dissimilar to the official manual from Nikon (but way more accessible as it's in paperback format, not the cumbersome A4 version). Bearing in mind the D3100 is an entry level DSLR, I would have liked to have seen more in the way of how to use the many camera features to take better pictures in certain conditions and effects, more generic guidance ironically. There are plenty of 'hints' interspersed but many of these are functional.So as an aide-memoir to this particular model and all its settings, this is good. As an accompaniment to someone looking to move up from compact cameras to DSLRs and needing a bit of photographic assistance, it's not so good.

Very good and easy to understand good for an beginner clear clean descriptions and instruction.Ideal for a beginner or professional.

This book has been so useful. It arrived very quickly and is written in a language which is easily understood. It has made photography fun.

You can't rely go wrong with gem books.
