Mesmerizing mind-f*ckery!!
It seems from the reviews, people either love this film or hate it. If you like gorgeous, heartbreaking isolated settings, a sense of unnamed dread throughout, psychological mind-f*ckery, enjoy seeing main characters who are gay in a movie that's not simply about being gay or coming out, enjoy pondering dribbled hints and creepy shenanigans which aren't fully explained, and you don't mind being left with questions, you'll love this film. There's definitely creepy supernatural stuff occurring here, and also a killer, but in the end it's ambiguous as to where the line between reality and the beyond can be drawn. In that way it reminds me a bit of "A Pure Formality" with Depardieu/Polanski. Who is dead and when and what is real and what imagined? On the other hand, if you're too impatient for subtitles or are looking for a Halloween-like slasher, or a simple movie that ties everything up with a neat bow, look elsewhere.

Strong start but finish in a ditch.
Everthing looks good about this film; starts off with a very intriguing, straight forward story line. LIke a Hitchcock thriller, important elements are slowly revealed and that certainly intrigues and keeps your interest and has you itching for more. You really want to know what's going on. But unlike the great Hitchcock, YOU NEVER GET TO FIND OUT. People come and go with no explanation, things happen without explanation and half the time you have no idea what is fantasy and what is reality. Turns out, those mysteries will remain mysteries right to the credit crawl. The two leads do a terrific, wonderful performances, but the director loses all control about half way thru and then you, along with him, have know idea where this story is going except into that big hole in the ground. The second star is for the spectacular cinematography and the fact that the mysterious goings-on are done well enough that you stick with it assuming it will at some point all make sense. No such luck. You can turn this mess off anytime after the first hour and it will make just as much sense if you stay and watch the whole thing. Plus, the subtitles at times zip by much too fast to read, so keep your finger on that pause button. Funny thing is, on those long pieces of dialog that I was frantically hitting the pause button thinking that if I missed any of the dialog I would be missing something that would shed light on what was going on. Au contraire mon fraire -- nothing that anyone says explains anything. Gimme a Hitchcock classic any day of the week. At this time RIFT is Free on Prime, but even at free, you will kick yourself when the credits start to roll.

If you don't like movies where you don't get all the answers...you'll hate this. I loved it.
This is the first review I've ever been compelled to write, because I watched this movie last night in the dark with surround sound headphones on and it haunted me so much, I dreamt about it. It's rare to find a psychological horror film that can really continue building up your anxiety all the way through, but this film does it brilliantly. That being said, if you like movies where you find out all the answers...you'll hate it or feel unsatisfied. Personally, I grew up loving Stephen King's short stories where you get a snapshot and a resolution of some kind but don't always get all the answers. That's also a rarity these days, so I have a soft spot for movies and shows that take that risk knowing a lot of the audience hate that. The cinematography as other people have said is masterfully done. The location selection and desolation of it lend itself to both the tension of the film and also serves to demonstrate the kind of emptiness you feel as a relationship ends, but also the pitfalls and rifts in our own mind connected to childhood trauma. The actors do an amazing job at juggling the emotional rollercoaster ride one feels when trying to maintain a friendship with an ex, or even during a time when you give each other distance for that to be a possibility...you have so many unspoken truths, lies, unresolved feelings. You still feel that connection, that love...that attraction and deep down that care for the person's well-being.You don't quite know what is going on at any given point in time...and I have my own theory on what is actually happening based on clues in the beginning on the road to find Einar. It's a great movie...but one I think you should watch twice.

Spooky, Creepy
This movie is set in Iceland. The cold wind blows. The fields are all brown. The landsape is sparse except for the odd tiny bush. The snow covered mountains sit quietly in the background. The area is deserted except for a few mysterious hitch hikers. The mesmerizing, terrifiying music is a work of art that sets the tone for the whole film. The supernatural is unleashed. Boo!! The movie sets the imagination spinning. Low budget, high quality.

a so-so thriller
This wasn't nearly as good as I was hoping it would be. Since I found out there are movies made in Iceland I've been intrigued and mostly pleased with what I've seen. I'm always worried when the director is also the writer of the film, and once again I'm proved right. A different director will usually catch things that don't fit together, don't make sense or interrupt the flow of the film. That didn't happen here. I'm not sure why the story revolved around two gay guys, but if he wanted to make a film featuring gays, that's fine, but I felt some of the scenes were superfluous and stopped the suspense in its tracks. The acting is all right, and this may sound shallow, but I didn't find either actor or the characters they played attractive or appealing, which didn't help to keep my interest in them. And lastly, the ending of the movie will infuriate or confuse you, but it certainly won't bring the story to a logical ending. If you have nothing else to do, watch it, but be forewarned.

Put your phone down...
This isn't some movie you can throw on and then continue to browse through your phone. It requires patience and your unwavering attention; and with scenes and a story this good you shouldn't have any problem with that. Beautiful movie. Suspenseful in all the right places and it leaves enough for you to ponder about after it finishes. This movie had me going though all types of feelings from the start. I recommend 100%%%%%
