Giro Flume: Superb Helmet
Here is a compelling endorsement for a helmet: my 5 year old son went bike riding today with this helmet on. An hour and a half after he finished riding, and was playing calmly in the yard with toy cars and trucks, he still had his helmet on. I don't know if he forgot he had it on, or just liked having it on. Either way, same point: this thing is comfortable! (And it wasn't that he liked the novelty of it; he's used it average 5-7x / week for the last year and half since we got it).I think that's the most important thing I can tell you about the Flume, because you already know this helmet is safe, as it is made by Giro, meets all the safety requirements, and has not had any recalls or problems. Which only leaves one main point regarding safety (which at least one other reviewer made too) -- any helmet is only going to work if the kid is willing to wear it, wear it fitted properly, and wear it the whole time!In my experience it is very easy to adjust the Flume to an excellent fit. The fit is snug, secure, level, and comfortable, and it stays that way throughout long, vigorous rides -- no shifting on the head, loosening up, or creeping off level, and no digging in or unequal pressure at any points on the head. The helmet is durable. After average 5-7 uses per week over 1.5 years, the headband is still fully attached to the foam at the attachment points; the chin-strap clip still works like new; the rear dial still works like new; no other deterioration.Other than that, the helmet is light, nicely shaped and balanced, and looks cool. All around winner. One minor negative point: the dial in the rear is slightly difficult to use when the helmet is on the child's head; it sits up against the back of the head in a flattish way that makes it a little difficult to turn without pinching the hair on the back of the neck. But it is very easy to take the helmet off, turn the dial, and put the helmet back on. This drawback is so minor that it should not deter anyone from buying this helmet! You don't need to use the dial often anyway, because over time it stays where you set it -- it doesn't creep looser. I put this point here more in case anyone from Giro reads these reviews and they might be able to tweak the design a bit. Also I make this observation after having previously used the Giro Me2, on which the rear dial is very easy to adjust while the helmet is on the child's head without pinching the hair, so I might be a little spoiled. And this flatter dial on the Flume may be more comfortable for the child during normal use than the chunkier dial of the Me2, anyway, I don't know.If your child's head is in the right size range for this helmet, you can stop comparing choices now -- buy the Flume!

The perfect helmet
My son had a Lightning McQueen helmet for about a year but recently has been wanting to take it off because it was hot and itchy. As a parent, it is distressing when your kid starts to hate is helmet (especially for a kid who is always pushing his limits). At first I was going to get the Giro Rodeo but saw that it ran incredibly small and several people in their reviews recommended this helmet. My son just turned 4 and is a little smaller than average and this helmet fits absolutely perfectly. The adjuster in the back allows you to dial in the perfect fit.One significant benefit of this is that the design is very similar to adult helmets. My son really looks up to me and was so excited to have a helmet just like daddy's. To him it is a sign of being a "big boy" Now that his things are starting to look like mine.Second, unrelated, I was mowing the yard yesterday while he played with his bicycle and scooter in front of the house. When I needed to mow the side in back of the house I asked him to come with me (I don't like him playing out front when I cannot see him). Anyway, he came and played for a good 30 minutes while I was mowing the yard and never took the helmet off. I don't know if he just didn't notice it was on, or that it didn't bother him, but either way it didn't bother him in the least. This is a very welcome change from his always talking his other helmet off.I am so thrilled with this helmet and would recommend it to anyone!

Affordable noggin protector
Pros:1. Lightweight2. Vents work well3. Easy to adjust the straps and get a good snug fit4. Fits my giant head (wear 7 5/8 sized hats) !Cons:1. Still a little stuffy despite all the vents2. Visor really doesn't do muchSummary:Overall, a great helmet for a low price. I have yet to have an accident so can't comment on how well it protects my head, but from reading other's reviews who have suffered an accident, it appears to do a great job. It is very adjustable, and fits my giant watermelon sized head. I bought my wife the exact same helmet in a girly color, and it fits her normal sized head just fine as well. The straps are very easy to adjust and can adjust to various head sizes. The quick adjust knob really does work. There's also space in the back for my wife to pull her ponytail through without compromising how the helmet sits on the head. The helmet is light and doesn't add much weight to your head so it's easy to forget that it's on, but it still gets stuffy despite all those vents, so you never really forget. But I comfortably wear it riding in the middle of summer in North Carolina without too much trouble. I would highly recommend this helmet.

Cool Helmet for Cool Kids
The problem with bicycle helmets is that they are not cool. My son didn't want to wear the dorky looking young adult helmets on display at the local toy store or the boring helmets on display at the bike store. Enter Amazon.I ordered this helmet because of the graphics, but when it arrived, I was impressed by the number of vents, fit and finish. While Giro is a good brand and I own an adult Giro helmet, I had no idea they made such nice children's helmets. Other than weight and number of vents (which are things that matter to serious cyclists, but not as much to young boys), there is not much difference between this Giro helmet and the adult models costing several times more.Plus, the cool graphics will have your child wanting to wear it (we got the Blue Flame version, which looks even better in real life than in the pictures). If you need a helmet, this is a well constructed one that kids will want to wear, which is half the battle. Recommended.
