One of the best, perhaps THE best
One of the best, perhaps THE best, small torches available. They still haven't got the distress signal ("SOS") timing right.

Great torch but not really suitable as a bike light
Really great light. I bought it as a bike light. That hasn't worked out so well as it is so bright I actually had a driver tell me off for using it! Also the button is really hard to push when wearing winter riding gloves. Also to get into the flashing modes is tricky. The flashing modes also seem to turn them selves off after a while.Overall though i'm really impressed by this light and I will probably get a proper bike light and keep this as a torch

Small, unobtrusive and very handy
In with the Proton Pro you get a nice `Proton' styled nylon sheath with both a Velcro belt loop and a stainless steel lanyard loop for carrying. The sheath closes with a Velcro fastener. You also get a detachable pocket clip (main came fitted) and a small steel spacer for when the clip isn't in use. The finish on the light is pretty average so don't be expecting something flawless, however this `lesser' standard doesn't appear to continue to the light's innards so has no impact on its function. The Proton Pro has both white and red LEDs, the white being centred in the reflector and the red being at the edge; you can use either one of them on their own or both at the same time, but why you would want to is a bit of a mystery. Although I don't have a light sphere to test its brightness, judging by my other lights I'd say the Proton Pro puts out something like 120 lumens, pretty good but certainly not at the top level of LED lights. The beam is also very concentrated with relatively little overspill so it's perhaps not best suited for night-time walks when you'd be forced to do the old `watching the bouncing ball' trick. Although the beam produced by the white LED is very even, being located where it is, the red LED produces quite an uneven beam that's particularly noticeable when on full brightness. The Proton Pro has several modes and getting to them can, at first, be a bit of a pain, not helped by the fact that the light is operated using only one button. But once you get used to how the light works finding the mode you want will be pretty straight-forward. As well as constant on, the Proton Pro also has `slow beacon', `medium beacon', `fast beacon' (strobe) and SOS modes, each being available with both the white and red LEDs. My light came in what the manufacturers call `point of purchase' (i.e. display) mode, so I had to hold the button down to turn it off. Activating each mode is simply a matter of holding down the button until you reach your chose mode - hardly ideal if you're in a rush but perhaps unavoidable. The brightness of each LED can also be varied by holding down the button when in `constant on' mode. All in all, the Proton Pro doesn't excel in any area - it's not particularly bright, it's not that well finished and its beam isn't overly useful - but it is still one of my preferred lights because it's small, it takes a single AA battery and it has lots of gadgety features.
