Tomahawk
Very good action western in which the historical incident known as the Fetterman Massacre is drawn on and woven into an otherwise heavily fictionalised history. The aforementioned battle would have been better if done larger scale and more accurately, but the film is good overall. I always find it interesting how films like this show that the writers did do some research but chose to play it so loosely. An added battle is thrown in which was known as the Wagon Box Fight as if it happened at the same locale, Fort Phil Kearney, though it did not. They did make the valid point though that that fight shook the Sioux and Cheyenne coming rather closely after their victory over Fetterman, as then, a relatively small force of soldiers inflicted heavy losses on a rather huge force of warriors, due to new, faster firing breech loaders. I give the film credit for some historicx points thereby as so many Hollywood films show troopêrs pumping away with Winchester repeaters which were NEVER U.S.Army issue, although some officers used personally purchased weaponry at the time. P.S. Jim Bridger (VAN HEFLIN) wasn't at either incident.

Indian Film
Dilys Powell once wrote in her Sunday Times column that there were no bad westerns. Instead, there were superb westerns, good westerns and westerns. Her list of superb examples contained three films: Shane, Lonely Are the Brave and The Battle at Powder River (Tomahawk). The story of her third choice concerns the difficulties of making and keeping peace treaties with the Indians. The issue is for a road through Sioux territory to the gold stikes of Montana but there is a surreptitious intention to build a fort, north of the territory, to protect it. No treaty is signed and things are left on a knife edge until an Indian boy is killed. This leads to hostilities with central character, Jim Bridger, sternly payed by Van Heflin, torn between sympathy for the red man and allegiance to his own kind and the army. With Bridger having a personal vendetta it could be described as a revenge western but this is a secondary element in the storyline and some of the plot divergence is a little contrived, even standard, to keep him on ths side of the white Americans. The film is considerably elevated by the use of real Indians and by majestic portraits of them although Monahseetah, the squaw linking Bridger to his past tragedy, is played by white American actress, Susan Cabot, complete with make-up but what we are looking at, of course, is still Hollywood. The voice-over at the begining and end of the film is a little srident and lacking in subtlety, at least for most British tastes I suspect, but there are other invigorating or elegant touches such as the troopers spinning round at the sound of Jim Bridger's name and the camera panning from eternal skyscapes to scenes of the action. If Dilys Powell's claim of innocence for all westerns and her third placing for this one was a little preferentially positive we can fairly say that Tomahawk is probably the best film about Red Indians ever made. In spite of the injustices the final battle with breech loading rifles is tolerably staged. After all the Indians were defeated.

Great indians and soldiers movie
First of all Tomahawk ( Universal Series ) is high quality picture and sound. And the film is truly a great indians and soldiers story like we saw them when we were kids on sundays and played soldiers and indians all the way home from the theater. Van Heflin and Yvonne Carlo are very good of course and Alex Nicol is a brilliant cool sadistic villain. Why weren't he in many more pistures than he was?The plot is built on real historic events namely the Fetterman massacre, a disaster for the US Cavalry ten years before the battle on Little Big Horn. The plot follows the real happenings only loosely but that's okay. The best thing though is that the sioux indians are so fantastic authentic. These are not some Puerto Ricians with stupid wigs, these are like taken out of a history book or out of a John Ford film. This fact creates atmosphere and lots of thrilling camera work.
