ADMIRAL

Best large scale naval strategy and tactics movie ever made
The story is from the days of Englands Charles II and the Dutch civil war between republic or tyrant monarchy. The naval warfare tech is 16th-17th century."Admiral" is a dramatized history lovers delight. It's an epic. The cinematic version is extraordinarily accurate in detail (mostly) and grossly in timeline error. The last of 4 'huge' sea battles were really the first. Likely only the history buff will notice. Then again, the Union Jack, costume and Rembrandt/Reuben paintings are period correct. The city sets are correct and outstanding with some non-Dutch shot exceptions. The special here is the accurate depiction of the order of battle when hundreds of ships of the line approach, engage at 100 yds to take advantage of an opportunity and win the day. Excellent depictions of the complex "Crossing the T" maneuver and its counter. It’s the fidelity of the battles that make the movie extraordinary.

A great movie!
My husband and I saw this after we got home from visiting the Netherlands and it provides a lot of insight into the war between the Dutch and the French during Holland's Golden Age. The film centers around one of the greatest heroes of the Netherlands, Michiel de Ruyter, who was made Admiral of the Dutch fleet at the time the young new republic was on the brink of civil war and was being attacked by the English and French.Except for a cameo appearance by Rutger Hauer, most Americans will not recognize the names of the cast members as this film is in Dutch, with English subtitles. Even so, it is a well made and there is a English language made for the UK but it is a full 28 minutes shorter. Stick with the Dutch version, even though you'll have to deal with the subtitles. You will be glad you did.

The combination of...
... cinematography, directing, acting and one of the most hauntingly beautiful scores I've yet heard bring this film almost to the masterpiece level. Any of those alone would have set a movie of this genre apart, but collectively they are impressive. I cannot overstress the impact a good set of wired headphones will make in the experience. I wouldn't use bluetooth 'phones because of the latency (words sometimes don't match the lips) but if they are all that's available, use them anyway. The soundtrack/music will not make the same impression without headphones. The music especially. The acting is top shelf, by all. The lighting is so well done, I wasn't sure there was a lighting crew necessary as everything appears to be done in ambient light. Very well done. The realism of some scenes was such that I was taken in. Particularly the mob scene where the PM and his brother are attacked. It caused me to do some quick research on pack behavior. Coming back to the film and watching it again, better armed this time, I was struck at the realism and how dangerous and quickly a crowd of simple minds can be whipped into a frothing rage by a very few instigators. One or two is all it takes.Other realistic exercises are the sea battles. I have never been in a sea battle, but I'll bet that is not far from the real thing. I have to believe the shipboard impact scenes in this film were mostly sophisticated graphics. There would just be too much risk otherwise what with chunks of wood the size of a staircase flying around having been sent aloft by a cannon ball. Very well done.Regarding the protagonist, Adm. De Ruyter, much is left out and much is wrong if my research is correct, but this is a film commissioned by a country that doesn't make many films and it is about their most famous sailor, so I'll let the nitpicking go and give the Dutch their very well varnished hero. And for all his other adventures, Adm. De Ruyter was a bona fide naval hero. This was not the first time I'd heard his name. He is regarded still as one of the best tacticians and boldest raiders (De Ruyter) ever to weigh anchor. So, you see, the Netherlands didn't just give the world windmills, sabots and tulips.

Admiral A true hero to the Netherlands
Based on a real hero to the Netherlands and its people, I watched this movie inspired with its historical facts and how one man was looked at for the great things he did for his country, . Of the many selfless fights at sea to keep the Netherlands out of the hands of England and Frances control. I could not leave the room I was locked into the action packed scenes and the lives that were told of. Subtitles kept me from a few hours if not more after you reach the end, WOW. pt me paying attention so I would not miss a thing. I also spent the last hour yelling at the screen and characters along with crying with all that was told, so real for me anyways. I really enjoyed the movie and just wanted it to go on and on. If you want a movie that will take hold of you and your not afraid to show a tear or more, I recommend this m and the impact it will make on you for a few hours if not more after you reach the end. Did I say WOW?!

Great subtitled movie!
Very well done historical movie. Battle scenes were incredible. The Dutch did a great job! My only complaint is with Amazon Video, in that they did not indicate anywhere that the movie was subtitled. I watched this movie with a person who does not read English well enough to keep up, so I had to read the subtitles out loud throughout the movie.

Interesting way to learn some history
What little we Americans know about the long history of wars in Europe usually comes to us from a British perspective. This movie presents one maritime war from a Dutch point of view. The special effects are not the greatest, making it hard to imagine just how these ships are maneuvering and attacking each other in formations. But it's chilling to think of them firing broadsides into each other at such close quarters, thousands of seamen dying in a day. The movie does a good job of summarizing Dutch politics at the time, and humanizes the Admiral by bringing in his wife and family.
