Good book with interesting ideas
This book interested me as it deals with faith and I was interested in what he would think in two of the three areas. The author being from southeastern North Carolina was the tipping point as I also like supporting local (or once local -- once local because I relocated to the Texas Panhandle) authors.I enjoyed the sections on science fiction and superheroes the most; I don't play video games, but could understand the basic points. The author had interesting ideas and gave me much to reflect on.The only down side is that the book needed better editing. It sounded as though he were talking to young people (his intended audience), but a good editor could have smoothed out some of the choppiness and made sure that ampersands were turned into "and" in the text.I'll continue reading the series of four books.

I liked this book !
I liked the fact that this author found Biblical principles and correlations to normal stuff I can relate to. Who would have seen a video game like Halo as being a picture of Jesus ' sacrifice? Or Battlestar Galactica's quest for a new home as Christians' seeking their own eternal home? Talking about some games I had no experience with was informative and the fact this preacher dude was knowledgeable about so much stuff was refreshing. Most pastors are judgemental and churchy but this Hector person sounds like a real person . Maybe what he has to say is true--you can see God in everything! I'm gonna read another of his books!

A brilliant resource for Christian Geeks
I've been a nerd probably since I picked up my first copy of Chronicles of Narnia as a kid. I've been a Christian since college. And I've never been ashamed to be both at the same time. It's nice to meet someone else who isn't, either. This is a great resource for opening doors of conversation with my unsaved geek friends and finding opportunities to share the gospel. My only gripe is the amount of typos. (Hector, buddy, if you need a proofreader, just let me know!) But the message is so powerful, you can overlook that easily. Can't wait to read the other books!

What took me so long to read this?
As a person who is into sci do and fantasy who is also a Christian I loved this book. If I didn't connect to a chapter I just skipped it. There are gamer references that my boys did connect with and understand. It is a quick read with solid scripture references.

Great for daily reading!
Really enjoyed reading this . . . although I could have likely read it all in one sitting I chose to read a chapter a day as part of my daily readings. Hector made even the fandoms I had only heard of but knew nothing about relevant and easy to relate to. Great job!! I can't wait to start the next books in the series.

Needs Some Work
I'll say this--the ideas aren't bad. Some of them are quite good. The topics covered are quite varied and describe different elements of one's faith in different areas, like Doctor Who, Firefly, superheroes (there are many), and others. The analysis is decent enough, and ultimately does give more insight into Christian beliefs by examining works in pop culture. The problem is that the formatting is terrible. There is no uniform writing style, and the quality of appearance switches around. Sometimes words get caught up in a format so that what should be "normal text" is highlighted, or italicized, or made into superscript. Some words are misspelled or used incorrectly.Honestly, "Faith & Fandom" doesn't look like a final draft--it's closer to a draft that never got a second look by an editor, or at least someone trained in grammar. In many ways, it doesn't feel like it was "written by a writer."This doesn't make any of the ideas less valid, but it's distracting to read.I feel like I was cheated, in some ways. No one bothered to make this book shine. It has its heart in the right place, but in the end, I was disappointed with the result.

Must Read!
No matter if you are a die hard fan or a newbie, this is a must read for everyone! Hector does a wonderful job of drawing comparisons between video games, comic/sci-fi characters and scripture. But it doesn't stop there. The author then breaks down how the similarities between "Faith & Fandom" can help strengthen our faith and walk with Jesus Christ. The Doctor once said, "You want weapons? We're in a library. Books are the best weapon in the world. This room's the greatest arsenal we could have. Arm yourself!" Let me encourage you to arm yourself by adding this great read from Hector Miray to your arsenal!

No Power in the 'verse can stop this book from being awesome.
I absolutely love the chapters based on characters from Firefly. (I gotta admit River Tam: The Truth will set you free) was totally my favorite chapter in the book. it has chapters on Firefly, Doctor Who, a lot of different superheros like Superman and Ironman, and even has chapters on different video games. How often do you get to read a book with so many different fandoms all together in one book? I've read several books that attempt to connect some work of science fiction to a religious statement but none that have worked as well as this book does.

Badly formatted
It's ok, but the book is very badly formatted, which makes it out to be a cheap production.

Love this book series !!!
I love the parallels Hector and friends make. It's using the idea of parables in the Bible and instead of using average life, they use geek culture. Just great!
