A great bit of test gear for a great price.
The Surecom SF401 is an interesting device and great for basic testing field of radio communication equipment. It's a hand held frequency counter with CTCSS and DCS decoding and can handle analog and digital (DMR) radio systems. When held around 18" away from a transmitters antenna, the device will display the transmission frequency to a precision of 3 or 4 (programmable) decimal places. Although not as accurate as a lab frequency counter, it is perfect for field testing and checking the frequency and CTCSS tone of unknown transmitters. The only minor drawback of this product is the plastic case which would be much better if it was metal.(Review price £31.42)

Good value for money.
A handy little unit. Remember to press save if changing the number of digits (and perhaps also if altering the calibration). If you need the spectrum rather than just the frequency try: "Spectrum Analyser RF Explorer 3G Combo"

A Simple but effective tool.
I needed a quick and simple tool to ID the frequency used and associated CTSS DCSS tones of various PMR hand held radios in order to re-purpose and reprogram them without the need to engage our Radio Supplier. This did the job quickly and easily it saved me a load of time and money so it wasn't the cheapest solution out there but worth every cent to me.This needs to be used in close proximity to the radio/antenna (within a meter or so) a handy unit for the toolkit.

Nice and simple to use to check the frequency in use on two-way radios
This is a very simple way to test the frequency that a two-way radio is transmitting on.It displays the frequency that is in use and if analogue can display the tone codes in use as well. You have to keep transmitting the radio for a while for it to pick up the tone code in use.Set it to digital and it can show the frequency being used.

Ok for higher output units
I needed a unit for checking some radio packs. Unfortunately as my packs are only 50mW ERP this unit has trouble reading them unless they are plugged directly into the reader via a cable. Great for 1 watt or higher walkie talkies etc not so good for body packs and handhelds.

A Gem of a Product
well its a great little frequency counter its just the right size to fit in your pocket, being cheap I thought it would not be much good, but I have been proved wrong, its bang on reading the frequencies, there is one draw back you have to key up very near the counter but I am very pleased with it and save me having to spend a lot of money on one of the Hunter range which cost about £200 this will do just the same job. I would 100% recommed this product.

What a useless, rubbish, pointless piece of equipment
What is the point of a frequency counter when you have to stand right next to the origin of the frequency? This thing won't pick up a radio signal more than 18 inches away from the source, utter useless rubbish, avoid at all costs
