Cronos [DVD]

For me Guillermo del Toro's Spanish language movies are better than his more effects heavy Hollywood fair. I first saw this movie on a TV show covering horror movies about 20 years ago. Antiques dealer Jesus Gris (Federico Luppi) discovers a metal insect in the base of a statue. It attaches itself to him and he begins to change. There is a price for the gift of immortality he receives. The film is underpinned by a sense of sadness and this brilliantly counterpoints with the vivid colours injected into the film. This is a masterful character driven film, immortality is something to be possessed by the worst of humanity and not the best. There is a religious undercurrent here that many American or European horrors lack, it adds depth and a moral dimension to the film. This was my introduction to Guillermo del Toro and for that I'm grateful. If for nothing else see this for Ron Perlman's comedic touches as nephew / thug Angel. Well worth your attention and better than many of del Toro's English language films.

A partially subtitled film, that gives a unique twist to the standard vampire formula.This is my first Toro film and will watch more of his films.What i dont understand is... why on earth this film is rated 18.Its simply not 18 material. Final destination 3 has more blood and gore, Dog soldiers has far far more swearing and blood. (both rated 15)

Cronos by Guillermo del toro is a Spanish film set in the 90's. When grandfather and his daughter discover a golden object hidden in a old statue the grandfather becomes intrigued and the Cronos device turns him into a vampire!!! Cronos isn't any other vampire film its unique and very original its an emotional thrill ride from start to finish!Ron Perlman, the main villain, is fantastic!!! This film does have subtitles but Ron Perlman and his uncle both speak English throughout the film. Cronos is not a gore-fest film but it does have blood and cool/disgusting/scary make up though!I fully recommend this film if you liked let the right one in, the devils backbone and pans labyrinth.Cronos is another Guillermo del toro classic!!!!! BUY, BUY, BUY!!!!!

Decent DVD though

An inventive spin on a classic horror genre. Guillermo Del Toro's directorial debut is very promising showing his skills as a talented director; including his enchanting, gothic and familiar style.

Del Toros early films. An interesting twist to the vampire fable. Definately check out his other films, Pans Labyrinth and Devils Backbone. A worthy addition to the collection!

La crítica es sobre la edición UK de Cronos de Guillermo del Toro, En España en su día fue editada por Manga Films, y en la actualidad esta dificíl de conseguir, por lo que opte por pillar esta para regalar a un amigo, partiendo de que ponía que el audio estaba en castellano, mi sorpresa vino cuando al ponerla nos dimos cuenta de que no, solo viene en ingles ni audio castellano ni subtitulos. Por eso le doy esta baja nota, por otra parte decir que Amazon como siempre fenomenal no tardo nada en volver a ingresarme el dinero.
